Jennette McCurdy Reveals Why She Was “Pissed Off” At Ariana Grande In New Memoir
Jennette McCurdy had just dropped her long-awaited memoir I’m Glad My Mom Died, and fans are shocked about the story behind Jennette’s jealousy toward co-star Ariana Grande.
I’m Glad My Mom Died has popped off all over the internet after excerpts from the memoir, which were shared exclusively by Vanity Fair, shed light on the abuse Jennette McCurdy went through as a child star.

One of the major takeaways from the memoir is Jennette’s anger towards Ariana Grande during their time on the show Sam & Cat.
Sam & Cat was a spin-off show based on Sam Puckett (played by Jennette) who was a character from iCarly, and Cat Valentine (played by Ariana) from Victorious. The plot followed the pair and their journey in owning a babysitting business and all the wacky situations they found themselves in. The spin-off only saw one season, which had 35 episodes.

Despite the show being light-hearted and funny, Jennette recalls a difficult time on set. In the memoir, Jennette recalls where her jealousy of Ariana stemmed. One of the reasons for her anger towards the pop star was her absence from filming. At some point, Ariana had to miss filming Sam & Cat due to other commitments in her music career and, as a result, Jennette was forced to act with a box.
“The week where I was told Ariana would not be here at all, and that they would write around her absence this episode by having her character be locked in a box. Are you. Kidding me,” McCurdy wrote.
“So I have to turn down movies while Ariana’s off whistle-toning at the Billboard Music Awards? Fuck. This.”
McCurdy also mentions that she missed out on two projects because higher-ups wouldn’t allow her to miss episodes of iCarly but Ariana was allowed to skip two full episodes to focus on her music. “I’m pissed about it. And I’m pissed at her. Jealous of her,” Jennette wrote.
During her time on the show, Jennette admitted that she would compare her career to Ari’s booming music career. “I frequently make the mistake of comparing my career to Ariana’s. I can’t help it. I’m constantly in the same environment as her, and she doesn’t exactly try to hide her successes,” McCurdy recounted in her memoir.
However, it was an incident with Ari that “broke” Jennette. Jennette recalls the moment when Ariana revealed that she had just been playing charades at Tom Hank’s house and how it made her feel. “Pop star success I could handle, but hanging out with Sheriff Woody, with Forrest fucking Gump? This has gone too far. So now, every time she misses work, it feels like a personal attack,” she wrote.
Fans online rallied with the former child star, supporting her and her memoir. Some Arianators (Ariana Grande fans) have also defended McCurdy for her brutally honest experience working with the pop star.
I don’t think Jeanette McCurdy is bitter for admitting how she felt about Ariana Grande‘s career trajectory. This is someone that was told that she was worthless for a long time yet was the primary breadwinner as a child. I think… envy is natural, esp. in a competitive industry.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Jennette did mention that she wasn’t sure if Ariana would read her memoir. “I don’t know if she’d read the book or not, but I think it’s a really entertaining read regardless of who you are, so I hope she does,” McCurdy said.

Throughout the memoir, Jennette touched on some heavy subjects including abuse she received from her mother, an authority figure only named as ‘The Creator’ and other issues that she faced as a child actor. Thankfully, some Nickelodeon alum have come forward showing their support for her memoir.
