Out of nowhere, 29-year-old Australian tennis player John Millman has pulled off “one of the biggest upsets in tennis history”, defeating GOAT Roger Federer at the US Open today.

The unseeded Brisbane boy, ranked 55th, drew the short straw getting matched up against the second-seeded Roger Federer in the fourth round. As the game got started, Millman was predictably smashed around the court and lost the first set in a whitewash 3 games to 6. BUT SOMEHOW ~ against all odds ~ the underdog Aussie legend clawed his way back, winning the next 3 gruelling sets 7-5, 7-6, 7-6.

Tennis fans around the world are trying to make sense of the win, with many international sites blaming hot weather and pointing to Federer’s poor form as the key reason Millman managed to scrape through. But what does that matter? Us Aussies will take and claim any win for ourselves. It’s what we do best:

Millman himself couldn’t even believe it. In an interview after the game, he told the crowd:

“I’m probably in a little bit of disbelief,” he said. “I have so much respect for Roger. Obviously, today his game was not at his best, but I’ll take it.”

The Aussie has ridden the ups and downs across his career, facing injury setbacks and never winning against a top ten seeded opponent until today. This win now catapults him to play sixth-seeded Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinal matchup and no matter the result, he’s guaranteed a sweet-ass payday. Contestant’s cop a cool $475,000 USD just for reaching this far. Go you good thing!
