Good news, ladies of Australia! Victorian lawyer Kate Jenkins has been named the new Federal Sex Discrimination Commissioner. (Beyoncé chanting “who run the world” is heard in the distance)

Jenkins’ appointment has been long awaited as the position has been left vacant for over five months since the previous commissioner, Elizabeth Broderick, finished her term last year.

This is another step in an successful career as a fighter for human rights. Back in 2013, Ms Jenkins was appointed the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commissioner after two decades as a lawyer. Attorney-General George Brandis and Minister for Women Michaelia Cash said they were “deeply impressed” with Ms Jenkins’ leadership on sex discrimination and sexual harassment.

Many politicians and political figures have praised Jenkins’ success and her enthusiasm in her field. Australia’s human rights commission president, Professor Gillian Triggs is delighted by the news and has plenty of positive things to say about our new Sex Discrimination Commissioner:

“She brings a wealth of expertise to the commission, especially law, and I am confident that she will continue to contribute greatly to our work in advancing gender equality in Australia… I have admired Ms Jenkins’ leadership of the Victorian Commission over the last few years and believe that her appointment … will enable her to promote a truly national approach to the equality of all Australians, especially in employment.”

One small step for Kate Jenkins, one giant leap for equality and human rights!
