It was the interview that had hearts collectively breaking, and eyes around the country flooded with tears.
Former defense recruit Ken Mcllwain joined The Project tonight where he bravely shared a raw, honest and heartbreaking experience of rape, sexual assault and years of living with depression. His story articulately expressed the pure evil he faced under the care of an organisation that represents the nations safety.
Mcllwain has been involved in the current ‘Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse’ in Sydney this week. The Commission is investigating the conduct of the ADF Cadets division from 2000, and the ADF’s treatment of apprentices from the 1960s onwards.
The heartbreaking interview is now being labeled one of the most powerful moments on television this year, ending with him empowering others of abuse to speak up. Waleed Aly thanked Ken, saying:
“I don’t know if we’ve ever spoken to anyone who has been able to speak with such power and clarity – and in such a confronting way”
No other words we use to describe the moment can give it justice. Roll the video below to hear Ken’s awful experience and the powerful message he has for all those that have suffered similar cases of victimisation and abhorrent exploitation.
