Only the deepest level of pond scum could make House of Cards‘ Frank Underwood look good. That’s the effect that Donald Drumpf has on contemporary politics.

As House of Cards returns to Netflix, Kevin Spacey has said in an interview with NBC’s Meet the Press that he considers Trump as a fictional character – like that of Underwood, a character known as a cut-throat manipulator of non-existent morals.

When asked who would win in a debate between Underwood and Trump, Spacey said:

“I thought about this for quite some time and then I said as long as we understand that there is a distinction – that one of these figures is a fictional character … and the other is a fictional character. And I think as long as you understand that distinction.”

This isn’t the first time the two have been linked, similarities have been found from several sides including their controversial connections with the Ku Klux Klan. Entertainment Weekly even created a ‘Who said it: Donald Trump or Frank Underwood?’ quiz.

Spacey went on to say how House of Cards had predicted so much of what is currently taking place in American politics, but the show was actually much more moderate then some of the batshit crazy campaigning that has played out.

Spacey said at times after shooting a sequence he’ll ask himself if they pushed it “too far and then I turn on the news and I go, well, actually we probably haven’t gone far enough,” he said.
