Lea Michele, aka Rachel Berry from Glee, has finally addressed the scathing rumour that she can’t read by saying she “knew the lines” when she was on the hit musical show.

The up-and-coming Funny Girl lead spoke to The New York Times about this bizarre rumour, saying “it’s sad.”

If you need a quick catch-up on how the hell this rumour began, Page Six reported that the conspiracy began from the minds of Jaye Hunt and Robert Ackerman of the One More Thing podcast. The pair discussed a bunch of facts that could lead to proving that Michele is illiterate, citing that her Insta captions are super short and full of emojis, as well as referencing former co-star Naya Rivera’s memoir Sorry Not Sorry, where she states that Michele refused to improv on Glee.

The conspiracy theory spread like wildfire and, since then, people have used it as leverage when trolling the Scream Queens actress. More recently, people online were making memes regarding this theory after Michele’s recent casting as Fanny Brice in Funny Girl.

But yes, the rumours of Lea Michele’s incapability to read have finally been addressed by Michele herself telling The New York Times, “I went to Glee every single day; I knew my lines every single day. And then there’s a rumour online that I can’t read or write? It’s sad. It really is. I think often if I were a man, a lot of this wouldn’t be the case.”

Michele had tried to put these rumours to rest all the way back in 2018 via Twitter. The Glee alum responded to a tweet saying “Love READING this tweet and wanted to WRITE you back ? Literally laughing out loud at all this?Love you!!!?❤️”

However, Michele deleted her entire Twitter account a couple of years later in 2020, amidst trolling over fellow Glee star Naya Rivera’s death and hasn’t returned to the platform ever since.

Lea Michele Can't Read Rumours Finally addressed

One TikToker, The Gay Jesus (@JeGaysus), who was an extra on the set of Glee, spoke about how his partner was fired from set after he tweeted about Michele and she read it, proving that she can, in fact, read:

@jegaysus #stitch with @Patty Breaking News; I have personal information re: Lea and her set behavior #gleek #canleamicheleread #leamichelecantread #backgroundactor #extras #gleecast ♬ Spooky, quiet, scary atmosphere piano songs – Skittlegirl Sound

The response to Michele’s recent interview with the NYT has seen mixed reviews with some tweets calling her out for not addressing rumours of her racist antics on the set of Glee.

Before Michele deleted Twitter in 2020, fellow glee star Samantha Marie Ware accused her of microaggressions on set in a now-deleted tweet. “Remember when you made my first television gig a living hell?!?! Cause I’ll never forget. I believe you told everyone that if you had the opportunity you would ‘s— in my wig!,” Ware tweeted.

Michele did tackle the subject of bullying in the NYT interview but didn’t mention any specific allegations, saying, “I have an edge to me. I work really hard. I leave no room for mistakes. That level of perfectionism, or that pressure of perfectionism, left me with a lot of blind spots.”

Other Twitter users also pointed out that Michele didn’t really confirm nor deny if she can or cannot read in the interview.

The interview is hot off the press, so Michele has yet to comment on any critiques made by the public via her Instagram, so I guess we’ll have to wait for the next interview to get a definitive answer on her reading capabilities as well as a response to the allegations of racism.
