Let It Go: It’s Time For A Gay Disney Character As #GiveElsaAGirlfriend Trends
Cries for Disney to introduce a gay character are nothing new – but there are fresh calls for the animation studio to represent LGBT people as anticipation builds for the release of a sequel to Frozen in 2018.
The hashtag #GiveElsaAGirlfriend has been growing on Twitter over the weekend, with supporters hoping to finally see the introduction of the animation studio’s first lesbian character in Frozen’s leading lady Elsa.

The movement was started by teen activist and feminist Alexis Isabel Moncada tweeting: “Dear @Disney, #GiveElsaAGirlfriend”. Ever since, thousands have tweeted the hashtag, arguing the negative impact of kids growing up only seeing heteros on their screens.
#GiveElsaAGirlfriend because 1 in 5 kids are queer, but only 1 in 10 feel safe enough to come out.

It makes perfect sense. Elsa is arguably the most kickass character Disney has ever created and her song ‘Let It Go’ has become a gay anthem for personal acceptance and embracing individuality.
While several Disney characters sexuality and gender identity has been the object of speculation – looking at you Scar, Sebastian and Ursula – there has never been an overt Disney character of the LGBT persuasion.
It’s about fucking time.
Love is an open door. That door should be open to everyone, not just straight people. #GiveElsaAGirlfriend @Disney @DisneyPixar

#GiveElsaAGirlfriend because if my kid has 2 mums I think other kids will be more understanding if they've seen a gay relationship in movies

#GiveElsaAGirlfriend so little kids will know that girls loving girls is normal even when their parents teach them otherwise.

#GiveElsaAGirlfriend because it would be a huge step towards queer kids feeling loved and accepted from a young age

The possibilities are endless, in the move to reflect the kids that watch Disney films more inclusively.
