Cosmetics brands often boast about long-lasting products but can they actually survive a messy night out?

So we have put your fave liquid lipstick brands to the test in the name of scientific research, of course.

Because we all know the worst thing is when you leave home after doing your face and you’re feeling your look, only to look in the bathroom mirror an hour later and realise your lip colour has completely vanished. How rude.

These are the brands I tested out and all the deets:

  • #1. Covergirl, Melting Pout Matte, Colour: Secret, RRP $16.95
  • #2. Lime Crime, Matte Velvetines, Colour: Polly, RRP $28.15 (plus shipping)
  • #3. NYX, Soft Matte Lip Cream, Colour: San Paulo, RRP $12.95
  • #4. Jeffree Star, Velour Liquid Lipstick, Colour: Doll Parts, RRP approx $24.85 (plus shipping)
  • #5. Australis, Velourlips, Colour: Bae-Jing, RRP $10.95
  • #6. Maybelline, Super Stay Matte Ink, Colour: Lover, RRP $19.95

The plan was to get these brands to put their money where my mouth is and actually test them out on a messy night out. I’m talking a PROPER sesh involving drinking, eating too much greasy pizza and finishing it all off with a dirty kebab.

The love is strong between me and my wine. A bond that is unbreakable.

Is there anything better than a kebab to finish the night? I think not.

True friends feed each other pizza. That’s just the rules. I don’t make them.

This is very attractive and is my new Tinder profile pic.

I don’t recall much more from this night.

So anyways, I tried all six liquid lipsticks on six different nights out, wearing each shade for at least three hours to see how they stacked up.

Here are the results!

Covergirl

Verdict: This was not great. The formula seemed to dry really fast, which was encouraging, but before I even got a chance to eat with it on it had already worn away across the middle of my lips. All that remained was a weird, blurry crust around the sides.

Lime Crime

Verdict: This was really good! Sure, it looks like I lost a tiny bit of coverage in the middle, but that was mostly ‘cos I ate a kebab and tore it apart with my teeth like a wild animal so it’s not totally Lime Crime’s fault.

NYX

Verdict: This was bad. As soon as my lips touched another surface, the colour faded heaps. Within about 30 minutes, the bright pink hue was pretty much gone.

Jeffree Star

Verdict: Not too shabby at all. While the colour lost its intensity a bit, it still stayed even and lasted throughout the night so I was happy with it.

Australis

Verdict: It’s a ‘no’ from me. This one was probz the worst. The colour came off super easily, and within mere minutes there was no colour in the centre at all. This left a thick line around the edges of my lips. Not cute.

Maybelline

Verdict: Hallelujah. We are saved. This one did not budge the whole damn night. I even applied a lip conditioner on top and the colour stayed even. To really put it to the test, I ate pizza and then some Tim Tams too and it stayed exactly the same.

What did I learn?

You kind of get what you pay for, so Australis and NYX were by far the worst, but having said that Covergirl was also pretty average. As expected, cult brands Jeffree Star and Lime Crime were a superior formula.

By far Maybelline had the most staying power. Saying that, I woke up still wearing that damn shade and struggled to get it off. So if you’re looking for a lip colour to survive the impending apocalypse then it’s ideal.
