Logies 2016: Kitty Flanagan & Julia Morris Were Funnier Than All The Male Presenters Combined

What did we learn from the Logies last night?

Waleed Aly is an unstoppable fucking national treasure, and it’s about time that he is finally getting the praise he deserves.

People – especially Shane Jacobson – seem to be very uncomfortable with Lee Lin Chin finally giving SBS a Logie nomination and chose the night to poke fun at the channel and the newsreader with unfunny nonsense.

Noni Hazelhurst is a rockstar – we should bow down to her.

Shaun Micallef only gets better with age.

The Secret River is a show that exists and it could be worth a watch.

BUT most importantly: Women were a lot funnier than the men.

Namely, Kitty Flanagan and Julia Morris, who slayed the whole damn night. Amongst the awkward banter and missed punchlines, the two ladies were stronger comedically then all the male presenters combined.

Flanagan presenting with Peter Helliar, while wearing a stylish black-and white cocktail-style suit, complained she was “just up here to ask people to stop trying to order food and drinks from me, but table 47, yes, Ita [Buttrose], I will bring you one more round of Jaegar bombs and then cutting you off. It’s a long night, pace yourself woman, pace yourself.”

Flannagan’s material on Masterchef was the funniest point of the whole night, saying regarding the cooking-based reality television:

“I just want to let the kids know that if you want to be a chef, you can go to a place called TAFE. It’s pretty easy to get in,” she said. “I keep seeing all these people on MasterChef, My Kitchen Rules: ‘Cooking has always been my dream’. I wish someone told them about TAFE. Obviously TAFE is a little bit different.

“You will learn to cook with ingredients and utensils rather than cooking with your heart. You will also learn to put food on the plate rather than putting yourself on the plate.”

While Julia Morris was the most memorable presenter of the whole eve, staging a bizarre fall, before taking the stage once more with a hilarious rendition of Bonnie Tyler’s ‘Holding Out For A Hero’.

Comedian Dave Hughes appeared to be the dominant host last night and for anyone that is familiar with his material, he relayed a large chunk of his own standup in his Logies opening routine. While his breed of humour might be funny to some, he didn’t hit a lot of high notes.

Flanagan and Morris, two Full Frontal alumni are comedy pros. The Logies haven’t had a lone female host since Gretel Killeen in 2007 and it might be time to utelise Australia’s female comedy talent, because guess what: they are running laps around the boys.

Let’s get Kitty and Julia co-hosting for 2017!
