LOL: Margaret Court Is A New Gay Icon And This LGBT Club Wants Her To Get Down And Party

Tennis veteran Margaret Court continues to dominate the news for all the wrong reasons. From her remarks about same-sex marriage, likening LGBTIQA advocates to Hitler and the devil, to her recent offensive statements regarding transgender people.

It’s not like anyone’s asking for her views either. Marg’s going out of her way to not make any new friends and taint the love.

But as Marg’s Bible (which she loves to quote) says:

“if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.”

So queer events party CLOSET are inviting her to their 8th birthday party – and they’ve even made her the face of the event. She will be thrilled.

Mason Browne, co-producer of CLOSET told Punkee that their queer parties are notorious for their trademark tongue-in-cheek posters of celebrities (they once controversially featured Harry Styles), and they make no apologies for using Court’s face without her permission.

“When it came to coming up with a poster for our upcoming 8th birthday bash, we went back to our grass roots, and thought who else but Margaret Court?,” Browne said.

Mason said that while they respect Court’s achievements as a tennis player, they wanted to challenge some of her offensive comments targeting the LGBTIQA community and marriage equality.

“While she may be entitled to her beliefs, we’re entitled to laugh at them,” Browne said.

“We look forward to the day when same sex couples can marry in this country, our children can grow up being who they are and when our sports stadiums aren’t named after bigots.”

We could think of no better face for CLOSET, and the Melbourne queer events group are getting heaps of support from LGBT community leaders for their spicy poster. Even the Greens’ Jason Ball has thrown his support behind the event.

But no hard-feelings for Margaret, CLOSET are hoping that ol’ Marge will see the poster and she’s even invited along.

“We hope she decides to return serve and we invite her to come along. In fact, we’d even pay for her Qantas flight to get her there. We hope she sees what we see, a spectrum of wonderful people from all colours of the rainbow and their friends just being themselves.

“We would forewarn her of course that CLOSET is full of lesbians (and gay men and queer people of all persuasions)… just like tennis.”
