Coming Out Rom-Com ‘Love, Simon’ Is The Movie 2018 Needs & The Trailer Is Everything
The film that 2018 truly needs is here in ‘coming out’ rom-com ‘Love, Simon’. We are actually in love.
Based on the YA novel by Becky Albertalli originally titled Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda, the story follows 17-year-old high school student Simon, played by Nick Robinson. The story sees Simon fall in love with his secret pen-pal, who also happens to be the only person that knows he’s gay.
The film also stars ‘13 Reasons Why’s’ Katherine Langford and Miles Heizer, with Simon’s parents played by Jennifer Garner and Josh Duhamel. It’s an A+ cast and we are super psyched.
Add to this, it’s the kind a queer love story that we rarely see throughout the history of teen-targeted cinema.
Sure, there are LGBTQ+ films. Certainly last year’s ‘Call Me By Your Name’ was simply phenomenal but these movies often don’t appeal to teenagers, instead to an older audience. Love, Simon is the teen film 2018 needs.
Watch the latest trailer that just dropped and get ready to fall in a pile of tears.
Early reactions to the trailer have viewers getting a ‘Fault in Our Stars’ and ‘Perks of Being a Wallflower’ vibes from the film. It certainly promises to touch on the high school experience for teens today, telling a modern love story through a mix of humour and heart.
“I deserve a great love story,” Simon says in the trailer. “And I deserve someone to share it with.”
When it comes to queer coming-of-age films that appeal to a mainstream audience, they exist few and far between. ‘Coming out’ stories are too often associated with hopelessness and heartbreak, so the comedic beats the trailer hits offer a refreshing departure we can welcome.
Love, Simon is firmly based in the American high school environment with Riverdale executive producer Greg Berlanti directing the movie, so it’s set to be a supercharged teen-focused film. That dude made Bughead, he can do anything.
Author Albertalli has seen an early preview and reckons it lives up to the book.
It's funny and relevant and timeless and charming and honest and painful and SO ROMANTIC, THERE IS KISSING AND IT IS NOT HALF-ASSED.

We are so lucky, guys. I don't even know what to say. I'm so proud to even be associated with this movie.

As if we need any more convincing, the soundtrack is absolutely killer, including the likes of Amy Shark, Bleachers and The 1975, with Troye Sivan releasing a new track ‘Strawberries & Cigarettes’ exclusively for the film.
Okay, I’ll stop gushing now. But fuck yaaas! Bring this wonderful movie into our lives asap pls.
Love, Simon hits Australian cinemas 29 March, 2018.
BRING IT IN, FAM.
