Margot Robbie’s ‘Barbie’ Pay Is Actually Insane But She Deserves Every Cent
Barbie mania looks like it’s here to stay, with the Greta Gerwig film continuing to break box office records each week. It has become Warner Bros’ fastest film to gross one billion dollars USD globally – a record that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 previously held for 12 years.
Both critics and moviegoers seem to love it, and Australia’s very own Margot Robbie is set to take home a massive cheque for her involvement. Variety previously claimed that Margot’s salary was a hefty $12.5 million USD (roughly $19.2 million AUD), but the commercial success has more than tripled her expected pay.
Since the Aussie star’s production company LuckyChap Entertainment produced the film, Margot now stands to make a huge $50 million USD (roughly $77 million AUD).
According to Variety, these numbers come from three people who have inside “knowledge” of Margot’s deal. Our girl is absolutely killin’ it!
The star recently opened up about how she managed to secure funding for Barbie, admitting that she may have oversold it. Spoiler alert: she definitely did NOT oversell it.
“I think my pitch in the green-light meeting was the studios have prospered so much when they’re brave enough to pair a big idea with a visionary director. And then I gave a series of examples like, ‘dinosaurs and [Steve] Spielberg]’… and I was like, ‘And now you’ve got Barbie and Greta Gerwig’,” Margot told Collider.
“I think I told them that it’d make a billion dollars, which maybe I was overselling, but we had a movie to make, okay?” Alexa, play ‘Mastermind’ by Taylor Swift.
Did Margot Robbie really try to turn down the starring role in Barbie?
In the same interview, Margot explained her thought process around who should play Stereotypical Barbie in the Greta Gerwig film. She didn’t want Greta to feel “pressured” to put her on screen, saying that she was content with just producing the film.
“[Greta] was like, ‘Shut up, I want to write this for you.’ And I was like, ‘You might feel pressured to say that, but…’, and we did that dance for a while,” Margot recalled. “And then eventually I just accepted that she did want me to play the role, and then she wrote it.” Tbh, I can’t imagine anyone else playing the role, so I’m so grateful for the headstrong director.
