Is Christmas really Christmas without  ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’?

2020 has been an insanely tough year for so many of us. There were the horrible bushfires, global protests against racial injustice, and there was a global pandemic which literally put the world to a halt. But, with lockdown laws easing around the nation, it would seem that things are starting to look up and it’s all coinciding with the spirit of Christmas.

An adequate depiction of me getting ready for Christmas.

Christmas is a time of joy, celebration and being with family. And even though Christmas can be stressful, I’m keen to embrace it with open arms because lord knows we need some joy in our lives.

Now, I know what you’re thinking, when does the spirit of Christmas actually start? Well, I’m here to tell you that it’s already started because Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want For Christmas’ is officially back in the charts. As it should be.

The Power of Mariah During Christmas

No, it doesn’t matter when Myer starts selling Christmas trees or when Coles put hams on sale, Christmas officially begins with Mariah Carey’s powerful festive anthem. Why? Oh, because ‘All I Want For Christmas’ is literally the embodiment of joy in a song. You may think I’m being dramatic, but I am simply stating facts.

It’s hard to pinpoint when exactly the song became so embedded into the holiday spirit. Perhaps it all goes back to the most touching scene of Love, Actually, where Olivia Olson slays her cover of the song, coinciding with the climax of the film. You can’t tell me you don’t cry when you watch this.

Regardless, that joy has extended since the inception of the song to 2020, with the most recent manifestation of joy happening as Biden supporters danced in the streets after his Presidential win. You just have to see it to believe it.

So yes, in recent history, it’s become very clear that Christmas without ‘All I Want For Christmas’, is no Christmas at all. As a society, we need it; we crave it and we refuse to participate without it. Heck, we’ve been looking forward to this song coming back into our lives since October.

Today, the festive tune has just entered the Top 40 of the US charts on Spotify, meaning it’s officially being part of our lives once again. And if last year was anything to go by, it’s only going to climb from here.

After releasing another music video to accompany the Christmas carol, Mariah Carey was able to send the track to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 at the end of 2019. Meaning, that ‘All I Want For Christmas’ has already topped the chart this year, and we’re just waiting for it to happen again.

Now more than ever, we need this Christmas spirit. So, thank you, Mariah, for all the joy you spread in the world.
