Mark Zuckerberg and Dr. Priscilla Chan Announce Their Daughter, Donate 99% Of Their Facebook Shares
Mark Zuckerberg, the fresh faced schoolboy entrepreneur has grown up a little since his days featured on ‘The Social Network’. He and his wife Dr. Priscilla Chan have taken to Facebook to announce the birth of their new daughter Max. Oh, and some incredibly awesome news.
In a completely unprecedented reaction to the joyous occasion, the couple have announced they are contributing 99% of their Facebook shares, currently worth about $45 billion USD as of today, to the launch of the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, an organisation with the mission to advance human potential and promote equality.
In an open note celebrating the arrival of Max Zuckerberg, the couple noted:
“We must make long term investments over 25, 50 or even 100 years. The greatest challenges require very long time horizons and cannot be solved by short term thinking”
Initially, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative areas of focus will include personalised learning, curing disease, connecting people and building strong communities.
The Facebook page for the new initiative shared this video to give fans a little more insight about the birth, setting up the new project and what they hope to achieve:
A few weeks before Max’s birth, Priscilla and Mark took a morning to reflect and record their hopes for their daughter and all children of her generation.
