Last night’s Married at First Sight commitment ceremony was a momentous occasion, with the experts finally doing their jobs and setting two captives free.

Historically on the show, if one person in a couple tries to leave but their partner opts to stay, they have to stay for another week and work on their marriage. This is a stupid rule, keeping people trapped in an unhappy relationship for another week, even if we have seen some couples temporarily turn things around.

Thankfully last night, John Aiken woke up from a deep slumber and let Josh and Caitlin both leave their toxic, emotionally manipulative partners after their toxic, emotionally manipulative partners tried to stay in the experiment for another week.

We don’t think so Melissa and Shannon! Good riddance!

In other news, the promo dropped for tonight’s episode looks HEAVY with Claire coming clean on an admission to Jesse just as things appear to be going well for them… so did she hook up with Adam after all? I’m nervous.

But first, let’s recap last night’s commitment ceremony and all that drama that ensued.

Last night’s Married at First Sight commitment ceremony retold via the best tweets:

Jesse and Claire are doing well and Jesse’s ick list has all but vanished as he looks at Claire all googly-eyed. However, the preview for tonight’s episode tells us a different story, so uh-oh…

Harrison has his turn on the couch and says he felt like there was deceit in their relationship but he could fix things with Bronte after she apologised. Gosh, he’s such a good, forgiving dude! John doesn’t buy his shit and puts him on the spot about the girl’s phone number.

Alessandra questions Bronte and her security with Harrison, and you can tell our favourite expert just low-key despises the man. Bronte and Harrison opt to stay. Yay! Romance isn’t dead!

Dan and Sandy have their turn. Sandy is ultimately trusting of Dan but is not here for any of Harrison’s bullshit.

Ollie and Tahnee are as perfect as usual. Janelle and Adam choose to stay. Melinda and Layton talk about their different communication styles but also choose to stay.

Melissa and Josh are tense as fuck. Josh finally cracks and speaks his truth. He says Melissa has tried to restrict his access to the TV, his phone, put limitations on times he reads his books, tells him when and where he can go out, and limited intimacy, as well as degrading him and questioning his manhood.

Melissa’s explanation is so bad even Harrison is shook and Duncan calls her out on her perspective on masculinity after she says she needs a “manly man”. Melissa then says during Intimacy Week that sex felt transactional and “awful”.  John calls Melissa out on why she decided to share that and Josh walks out in tears.

Josh opts to leave, Melissa wants to stay. John gives Josh the choice to leave and he goes.

Duncan and Alyssa talk about their very great and exciting Intimacy Week. Duncan describes it as a great balance of dominance and delicacy. I must know more!

Cam and Lyndall debrief their issues post-dinner party drama, and the experts encourage them to find their ~balance~ whatever that means.

Finally, Shannon and Caitlin have their turn. The experts ask Shannon why he felt the need to fuck up Caitlin so bad and questioned his motivations. “Does it matter?” Shannon says. He then just agrees he was trying to hurt Caitlin. Then for some reason, Shannons opts to STAY?!

Caitlin also gets given the choice as to whether she wants to stay or go. Caitlin told Shannon he doesn’t deserve her, and that she wanted someone who was proud to be with her and appreciate her. We stan a self-loving queen!

Shannon dramatically takes off his wedding ring and storms off while the others comfort Caitlin. The trash always takes itself out!

Married at First Sight returns tonight at 7:30pm on Channel Nine.
