It’s time to set your phone alarm for 7:30 pm for the next 10-plus weeks and bid goodbye to your social life, because Married at First Sight has returned to our TVs.

It’s hard to think that it’s been a whole year since the likes of Bryce Ruthven, Booka Nile, and Bec Zemek graced our screens. But let us forget all about those guys, as we now have a whole new batch of contestants to contend with. Tonight’s episode introduced viewers to the men and women who will occupy our deepest thoughts (and fantasies) for the foreseeable future.

At the bucks night, there was Al who assured us that he was the most attractive man in the room, well before Mitch arrived via waterfall montage and had Al shaking in his stylish boots. Over at the hens, Olivia was anxious to arrive, admitting in an earlier confession that she struggled with insecurities around her appearance. Selina shared her struggles with getting her Cambodian-Chinese family to accept her decision to stray away from the life path they intended for her.

One contestant who drew attention at the hens was operations manager Tamara for expressing some rather harsh views on introverted people. She kept that chaotic energy going throughout her wedding to Brent, a hospitality specialist who spent his recent years in Dubai but had to return back home after losing business during the pandemic.

Put simply: Tamara and Brent are a terrible couple. They spent their entire wedding day bickering and between Tamara criticising her husband constantly, coupled with the condescending tone Brent used with everything he said, this will not end well.

Luckily it wasn’t all bad, as we had sales rep/wrestler Anthony and executive assistant Selin getting hitched too. These single parents actually seem to be well-matched: they are both wanting a strong family unit and prescribe to traditional gender roles. Let’s pray it’s all smooth sailing for them, as after the Tamara and Brent shitshow, they might be our only hope… well, until tomorrow night’s episode!

But before then, we simply must recap the first episode in very funny tweets!

Tonight’s Married at First Sight premiere retold via hilarious tweets:

We’re back baby and it feels good! The hens and bucks nights are upon us, so it’s time to meet our brides and grooms. Among the men, Jackson seems lovely while Al rates himself an “11 out of 10” and he is really… uh, something!

Tamara got some of the women offside for saying she couldn’t tolerate being matched with a “shy guy”, as she would “break him”.

Let’s jump into the weddings: firstly we have single parents Anthony and Selin. They appear to be an ideal match. Selin is from a boisterous Turkish family while Anthony is a professional wrestler.

After meeting at the altar, Anthony and Selin had instant chemistry. They both shared that they have young children and want a traditional marriage. Later on, Selin even gave her new hubby a taste of her culture with a Turkish dance performance.

On the flip-side, Brent and Tamara are a disaster. Tamara works in a corporate environment and has impeccably high standards, while Brent has just returned from a high-flying job in Dubai.

Brent has a foot phobia, so of course during wedding photos the photographer made him hold Tamara’s foot. It was painful.

After having a brief chat, Tamara got into her head that Brent was a bartender at a nightclub, but he later corrected her that he’s a hospitality specialist (??). Later at the reception, Tamara revealed a judgemental side, telling Brent and his rather unimpressed (and very handsome) best man, Levi, that she would be embarrassed to date someone who worked in retail.

To top it off, Tamara and Brent then start bickering over the correct way to cut their wedding cake. The fight continued throughout their first dance, as Tamara demanded that Brent apologised for handing her the knife wrong. What. A. Mess.

Married at First Sight returns tomorrow night at 7:30pm on Channel 9 and 9Now.
