MasterChef: Fans and Favourites premiered on Monday night, introducing Australia to the 12 returning contestants and 12 home cooks who will battle it out this season.

Andy Allen, Jock Zonfrillo and Melissa Leong returned to judge the new season, which will see the likes of series legends Julie Goodwin, Sashi Cheliah, and Billie McKay cook again in the kitchen that made their careers. Among the fresh faces are TikTok star Montana Hughes and firefighter Daniel Lamble.

There was one noticeable inclusion that set Twitter alight last night: John Carasig. If that name doesn’t ring a bell, then the following three words might: white chocolate velouté.

Former contestant John became part of MasterChef folklore when he decided in 2017 to change the planned dish in the middle of his team’s relay challenge, deciding to make a fateful white chocolate velouté (to pair with seafood?!), truly stitching up the team members who would have to follow him. While viewers were furious at the time, with years of hindsight, John’s choice has become one of the series’ most beloved memes, leading to John now being heralded as a bit of a hero.

Along with chef’s kiss casting with John, the series has also brought back recent faves from the 2021 season: wholesome king Tommy Pham and fan fave Minoli De Silva.

The line-up is incredible and if last night’s premiere is anything to go by, the returning contestants have met their match in some of the newbies, who have already demonstrated amazing cooking skills.

It’s game on! Bring on the new season.
