The Pop Girlies Are Dragging Their Exes And We’re Here For It

We all love throwing a little bit of shade at our past flings, but the queens of pop music — Miley Cyrus, Shakira, and Lana Del Rey — have thrown a full tree!

Miley Cyrus had fans gooped and gagged with the release of her latest single ‘Flowers’, as many have speculated that the self-love anthem is directed at her ex-husband, Liam Hemsworth.

To give you a bit of context about their relationship, Liam and Miley met on the set of the romance flick, The Last Song. The couple were on and off from 2010 up until their marriage in 2018 but unfortunately, things officially ended when Liam filed for divorce in 2019

But back to the release of ‘Flowers’, many fans connected Miley’s latest track to her ex-hubby due to the date of its debut. The music video was dropped on January 13, which is Liam’s birthday…. SHADY!

The song focuses on self-love and all that good stuff that you need when you’ve gotten out of a rough patch, but if you really listen to the lyrics, the chorus appears to be a direct reply to Bruno Mars’ track, ‘When I Was Your Man.’

This is important because fans online reckon that Liam once dedicated Bruno’s song to Miley during their relationship.

Although we can’t get over the genius chorus, fans have also pointed out another lyric that links directly back to Liam and Miley’s relationship. In one part of the song, Miley can be heard singing “built a home and watched it burn.”

Miley stans immediately linked this to Liam and Miley’s home that was burnt down during the 2018 California bushfires.

Miley has yet to come out and specify who this single is about, but many fans have already come to the conclusion that all the shade is directed at Liam.

And another pop icon has come to read their ex to filth, and that icon is Shakira.

Unlike Miley, Shakira has been super direct with her shade towards her ex-husband, Spanish footballer Gerard Piqué. The pair’s split was made public in 2022, with Shakira blaming the breakup on Piqué’s career. “He wanted to play football and to win titles, and I had to support him,” Shakira revealed to Elle. “I put my career in second gear and I came to Spain to support him so he could play football and win titles. And it was a sacrifice of love.”

Rumours of infidelity on Pique’s side came to light, with an insider claiming to Page Six that Shakira was “devastated to learn” about the affair.

In January 2023, Shakira went full savage mode against her ex with her new single, ‘Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol.53’. Shakira’s brutal lyricism immediately painted a picture of Pique and the woman he allegedly cheated with.

Throughout the song, Shakira flamed Pique with lyrics like “You swapped a Rolex for a Casio,” and “You swapped a Ferrari for a Twingo.” Ouch! One of my personal favourite bars is definitely, “So much time at the gym, but maybe work out your brain a bit too.”

Her savagery didn’t stop there. Shakira decided to take things to another level of petty by placing a witch mannequin on the balcony of her home with her song blasting on repeat. The witch is allegedly facing her ex’s mother-in-laws house!

In late 2022, Lana Del Rey also threw shade at her ex. In a legendary Instagram post, Lana revealed that she bought one billboard to promote her upcoming album Did You Know That There’s A Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd.

But where was this billboard? Well, the one billboard featuring her face is located in her ex’s hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma.

“There’s only one and it’s in Tulsa,” she wrote on her private Instagram post and added, “It’s. Personal”.

According to the LA Times, the billboard was directed at Lana’s ex of six months, Sean Larkin. Even though Lana’s billboard was arguably more subtle than Shakira and Miley’s shade, it’s still pretty iconic.

With Shakira, Miley and Lana all throwing shade at their exes, let’s pray this enacts an energy shift in how we approach the topic of our exes. It’s refreshing to see these strong women get candid about the struggles they faced in their previous relationships.

We love these relatable queens.

It’s also interesting that they’ve dropped these little acts of revenge so close to each other. It’s like they needed a community circle/venting group about their exes to cry and throw shade together. Can relate!
