Before Twilight, there was Team Miley or Team Selena and Demi, and it was probably one of the most immature beefs EVER.
Let’s rewind to the 2000s: Miley Cyrus was essentially the queen of Disney due to the success of Hannah Montana, but a bunch of new queens were making their mark on the iconic kids’ channel. Selena Gomez was slowly rising to fame due to her role as Alex Russo on Wizards of Waverly Place, and her bestie, Demi Lovato, was also on the ride as she scored the main role as Mitchie Torres on Camp Rock.
The chokehold they had on our childhoods could be best described as Disney Channel’s golden years (or Saturday Disney’s golden years cause my mum refused to pay for Foxtel at the time, but it is what it is). Whether you were craving fantasy, a musical movie or a show about double lives, Camp Rock, Hannah Montana and Wizards of Waverly Place quenched your thirst!
But behind the scenes of Disney’s golden girlies, a beef was brewing which eventually manifested into this iconic YouTube video that lives in my brain rent-free.
And what is that YouTube video, you say?
In 2008, Miley hosted a silly YouTube series called The Miley and Mandy Show alongside her then best friend Mandy Jiroux. In their videos, the pair would dance, sing and do random skits.
In one video, the pair decided to take aim at Miley’s fellow Disney stars, Selena and Demi, parodying their YouTube video ‘Selena and Demi Show Update’ and it was suuuper shady. Like they didn’t throw just shade, they threw a whole tree.

Teen girls are savages!
One of the major low blows was when Mandy copied Demi at the start saying “yeah I said it twice, got a problem with that?” and Miley replied with “Yeah, I do. Do you wanna know why? Because you got a gap!”
The comment made by a teenage Miley was obviously targeting Demi and her physical appearance. Ya nasty!
Mandy and Miley continued to mock the Disney girls and it was just super messy.
As an eight-year-old on the internet at the time, this was some piping hot tea!
What makes the tea even more interesting is that Selena played Miley’s nemesis on Hannah Montana, and at the time that Miley and Mandy recreated their video, Selena was rumoured to be dating Miley’s ex, Nick Jonas.
Miley kindaaaa apologised for the parody, quoting Elvis Presley saying “Imitation is the greatest form of flattery.” Oscar Wilde actually penned that proverb, but go off teen Miley.

In recent years, it seems like the Disney stars have put their differences aside. Miley and Selena have complemented each other during interviews and they even did an Instagram Live together.
