If you don’t value ever sleeping again then Netflix’s Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story is for you.

The 10-episode limited series digs into the grisly life and times of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer: relaying his childhood, his morbid fascination with death, and ultimately him murdering an estimated 17 men in Milwaukee, Wisconsin from 1978 to 1991.

American Horror Story fave, Evan Peters, has stepped into the role of Dahmer, which he pulls off with disturbing ease. Like for anyone who has watched the series, Evan IS Dahmer — it’s unnerving, but an impressive performance all the same.

At the forefront of the series are the families of Dahmer’s victims, the mothers and siblings of mostly queer men of colour, including several underage boys who Dahmer brutally tortured, murdered, and dismembered.

If viewers take anything away from the series, it’s that the Milwaukee police have a lot to answer for, as Monster examines how Dahmer’s neighbour, Glenda Cleveland (portrayed flawlessly by Niecy Nash), had contacted the cops several times suspecting Dahmer was up to no good, but they ignored her constant pleas to investigate him.

And in perhaps the most excruciating scene in the whole series (and there’s plenty to choose from), after being held prisoner by Dahmer, 14-year-old Laotian boy Konerak Sinthasomphone managed to escape but the police returned him to Dahmer after the murderer told them that Konerak was his boyfriend and they were merely having a lover’s quarrel.

It was possibly the most infuriating thing I’ve ever seen.

Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story is not an easy watch. Whether you’re familiar with the serial killer’s history or not, it’s an extra level of trauma watching it play out on screen.

(I highly suggest watching the joyous Heartbreak High after every episode as a palette cleanser. Take care of yourselves.)
