Right now more than ever we need some distraction in our lives, and if you’ve already breezed through Tiger King, you’re probably seeking your next Netflix obsession. Look no further.

Overnight the streaming platform dropped a trailer for a new true crime documentary that looks absolutely enthralling. Murder to Mercy: The Cyntoia Brown Story recounts the tragic story of Cyntoia, who was forced into sex trafficking as a teenager in Tennessee and in 2006 was convicted of killing 43-year-old, Johnny Allen, after he solicited the then 16-year-old at a Nashville restaurant. She argued at the time that she shot him out of self-defence as she believed he was going to kill her.

Controversially, despite being underage when she committed the crime, she was tried as an adult and sentenced to life behind bars.

The call for her release gained traction when celebs ranging from Rihanna to Kim Kardashian started to raise awareness for her case, rallying under the #FreeCyntoiaBrown hashtag. She was eventually granted clemency and released from prison in August 2019 after serving 15 years.

The documentary relays Cyntoia’s childhood and her history of abuse, laying out a timeline all the way up to her eventual release. It’s essential viewing imho. The doco drops on 29 April.
