REMINDER: Netflix’s Newest Teen Series ‘Never Have I Ever’ Is Out Now & It Looks Amazing
Give thanks to the TV gods because Netflix has dropped a new teen series, Never Have I Ever, and it’s getting rave reviews.
The 10-episode coming-of-age comedy follows the complexities of life as an Indian-American teenage girl in high school, and is inspired by creator Mindy Kaling’s childhood. The series is anchored by protagonist, Devi Vishwakumar (played by newcomer Maitreyi Ramakrishnan), and her two friends who seek to rebrand as they head into their sophomore year of school.
Watch the Never Have I Ever trailer and we’ll discuss below:
The series looks like Sex Education and Booksmart’s lovechild, but with the added element of shining a light on being a teenager — wanting to date, party, and become popular — while grappling with family and tradition.
Never Have I Ever has resonated with many Indian people on Twitter, who saw similarities between the teen series and their own experiences.
I'm watching #NeverHaveIEver and the way they explained Ganesh Puja is epic. I do feel super Indian right now. Thanks @mindykaling @netflix

"Aunties are older Indian women who have no blood relationship to you, but are allowed to have opinions about your life and all your shortcomings. And you have to be nice to them because you're Indian"

The series approaches sex in a refreshingly relatable way because let’s be real: most of us don’t have cool-as-shit parents like Otis’ mum in Sex Education who speak openly about sex.
“In many shows, the parents are young and cool and have these deep heart-to-hearts with their kids about their sex lives. Nope, that wasn’t my childhood! I wanted to show all of that through an Indian mum’s eyes,” Mindy said on writing the series.
As Devi starts to date for the first time, the show brings some serious man candy to our screens. Daren Barnet, I’m looking at you.
#NeverHaveIEver Daren Barnet is so hawt omg… Looking forward to season 2 hopefully pic.twitter.com/JjwYSvWgrg

Not to mention, Devi’s dad (aka Sendhil Ramamurthy from Heroes!!) could absolutely get it.

So if you’ve reached the end of Netflix’s library (mood!) after weeks of iso bingeing, it might be worth giving Never Have I Ever a whirl.
I haven’t properly binged an entire show in a while and I’m so glad it was this one. I don’t have enough words to describe the power this representation has. Just watch the show ?#NeverHaveIEver pic.twitter.com/AeFImbTBCs
