So Nintendo has heard the woes of gamers far and wide and finally answered the burning questions regarding Toad’s mushroom head (or hat!?), Mario’s nipples, lack of belly button and his polyamorous(?) relationship. Thank fuck.

Super Mario fans are nothing if not thorough and there’s been heated debate lately over a few things which needed clearing up pronto, so cheers to Nintendo for stepping in.

Whether or not Toad’s mushroom head is in fact his head or a fashionable statement hat has been literally tearing the fandom apart.

But wait, there’s more! Since the high definition graphics of Super Mario Odyssey for the Switch came along and revealed that our man Mario has nipples(!!!) but seemingly no belly button(???), it’s raised a lot of questions.

Could this be evidence in the cannon to support theories that Mario is not human?

Thankfully, in a YouTube video Nintendo published today, Super Mario Odyssey producer Yoshiaki Koizumi addressed some of these crucial questions.

Why nips and no belly button?

“To be perfectly honest, I didn’t expect that to be a topic among fans,” the developer said. “Once I heard that people were talking so much about Mario’s belly button it made me start to think about whether we should revisit the topic on the design side.”

Tbh I’m with the gamers who reckon the belly button is just covered by Mario’s high riding short-shorts but anyway.

Is that Toad’s head or a fashion-forward hat??

“So that as it turns out, is actually Toad’s head,” Koizumi confirmed.“I’m going to leave to all of you to figure out how it works out. Maybe there’s something inside.”

What’s the situation with Mario, Peach and Pauline???

“I would appreciate it if we could respect the privacy of those three at this time.”

Open relationship? Or Mario is trash???
