If you’re like me and have been blasting Olivia Rodrigo’s newest single ‘vampire’ all weekend, there’s probably one question you need an answer to: who is the much older person in the song who Olivia portrays as using her for fame and sucking the life right out of her?!

Well, Olivia’s rumoured ex Joshua Bassett can finally take a breath, because it seems like the singer has moved onto some new inspiration for her sophomore album GUTS

If we take a closer look at the lyrics, the singer has dropped some pretty big hints about the inspiration for ‘vampire’:

1. The person in question is much older:

“Went for me and not her/’Cause girls your age know better”

2. The person used her for fame:

“The way you sold me for parts/As you sunk your teeth into me, oh/Bloodsucker, fame fucker/Bleedin’ me dry like a goddamn vampire!”

3. Could this be a hint about what the person does for a job?

“I should’ve known it was strange/You only come out at night”

4. Their relationship lasted six months:

“Six months of torture you sold as some forbidden paradise”

5. They have a history of failed relationships:

“And every girl I ever talked to told me you were bad, bad news/You called them crazy, God I hate the way I called ‘em crazy too”

6. They’re into partying:

“I see the parties and the diamonds sometimes when I close my eyes”

Fans share reasons ‘vampire’ could be about Adam Faze:

Olivia debuted her relationship with TV producer Adam Faze on June 29, 2021, when she was 18 and he was 25. Fans instantly pointed out that Olivia released ‘vampire’ exactly two years later, possibly taking a dig at their relationship.

Their relationship lasted about six months, but I’m not sure if he’s fame hungry enough to be called a “fame fucker”. He made his Instagram account private during their relationship and has just over 50,000 followers on Insta, compared to Olivia’s 32 million followers. A source close to Olivia also bluntly told People Magazine that the song isn’t about Adam. Hmm.

Fans share reasons ‘vampire’ could be about Zack Bia:

Then we have Olivia’s potential relationship with Zack Bia, a DJ who previously dated Madison Beer (her song ‘Selfish’ is rumoured to be about him) and has been linked to Madelyn Cline. Olivia, who was 19 at the time, is said to have met Zack, then 26, in February 2022.

The rumoured couple were photographed a couple of times in NYC leaving clubs and restaurants, but news of their split broke in August. Yep, that makes their relationship about six months long…

Olivia also told Zane Lowe on Apple Music that she wrote the song in December last year, and Zack appears to be her latest breakup. Fans have pointed out that he’s a DJ, so he works “at night”, and appears to enjoy partying:

Some fans believe Olivia Rodrigo’s ‘vampire’ is about Taylor Swift:

There’s one more random theory floating around about ‘vampire’, with some fans thinking it might not be about an ex at all.

According to a few fans, Olivia could be salty about having to give Taylor Swift and her team writing credits on ‘Deja Vu’, after the bridge was considered to be similar to Taylor’s ‘Cruel Summer’ bridge.

The self-described Swiftie hasn’t been posting anything about Taylor lately, and unfollowed her (and everybody else) in December 2021. Here’s the reasoning behind this fan theory:

It’s unlikely Olivia will ever let us know exactly who inspired ‘vampire’. It could be one of her exes, her experience in the music industry, or a combo of all the above. Either way, GUTS will hopefully give us some more clues.
