If You Ever Feel Sad Or Lonely, Can I Recommend Buying An Oodie

Early on in the first wave of isolation, I was living alone, winter was coming, and while my friends were talking about all their random lockdown splurges on skincare, makeup, games, and all of the above, I wasn’t feeling it.

I wanted to buy myself something, but I wasn’t sure what. What would make 2020 better? What would I seek comfort in other than living on a diet that consisted solely of leftover Easter chocolate and pancakes for breakfast most days?

Somehow, as though it heard me calling, an ad for the humble Oodie popped up somewhere (wouldn’t be able to tell you which social media app I was staring blankly at when this happened). Everyone knows the best purchases one can make in life are the ones you don’t have to think too deeply about. Considering at the time, it was early-April, I had only left the house to go for a walk or go to the grocery store, it was a no-brainer for me.

I was going to buy the Oodie.

With the purchase done and dusted, and a $20 off code for signing up applied, a feeling of peace settled over me (well until I realised it was going to take four-six weeks to arrive). But the wait, I could deal with because the Oodie would be coming in time for the coldest months of the year.

Finally, May rolled around, and I shared with all my coworkers, friends, Twitter followers, and my local barista that my Oodie had finally arrived and I had never felt happier.

To say it was the best purchase of my life is an understatement. My lockdown depression was lightened. My body was warm. I had somehow managed to injure my shoulder and neck doing a sit-up (don’t ask) and being swathed in my Oodie made the pain feel better. As Sydney slowly opened up again, there was nothing more comforting than coming home after a night seeing friends and climbing into my Oodie.

I spoke about the Oodie to anyone who listened. I became a walking, talking sponsor for Oodie. I convinced at LEAST three people I know to buy one, and so far the feedback has been I haven’t ruined their life, but the Oodie has made them happier, warmer, and slightly less depressed.

BELIEVE IT OR NOT, OODIE DID NOT ASK ME TO WRITE ABOUT THEM. I just have an Oodie obsession.

The Oodie also proved a few important things to me:

1. It’s easier to delete Tinder and stick to it when you have an Oodie to keep you warm at night.

2. Money can sometimes buy happiness.

3. Being anxious about the state of the world/your life is made marginally better in an Oodie.

4. An Oodie makes your hangover better.

5. If you answer the door in your Oodie, the postman/woman will laugh at you, so you are making someone’s day brighter.

6. Watching The Bachelor — even if it may be the most boring season so far — is more interesting in an Oodie.

7. An Oodie can make you feel less lonely, for example, you can hug an Oodie in bed at night and it sometimes feels like a person.

8. If you turn up to your WFH meetings in an Oodie, everyone is jealous.

Sure, winter may nearly be over and the Oodie absolutely does not have a purpose in the Aussie summer, but if you’re after a big, warm, comforting hug from someone who’s not an actual person, the Oodie is for you.
