Just Hear Me Out: It’s High Time Cadbury Gave Us Giant Strawberry Freddo Frogs

Tell us you love Punkee without telling us you love Punkee. Sign up to our newsletter, and follow us on Instagram and Twitter. It'll mean the world.

As legendary Aussie inventions go, the Freddo Frog is up there with the Hills Hoist and Wi-Fi. Created in Melbourne almost a century ago, it’s the best part of every Favourites Party box, hands down.

Choccy connoisseurs will know that classic Freddo Frogs come in four flavours – Dairy Milk chocolate, Dream white chocolate, Milky Top, and strawberry filling. There are also heaps of Freddo spin-off products, including chocolate-covered Freddo bickies, soft cakes, Easter eggs, ice-cream cakes, and party packs, proving we’re living in a truly blessed time.

But friends, you didn’t come here today to hear me tell you Freddo Frogs are a God-tier treat – you already know this.

I’m willing to bet you’re here because you too have felt the unique disappointment of knowing you’ll never hold a Giant Strawberry Freddo Frog in your little chocolate-covered hands.

You see, the four original Freddo Frog varieties come in a standard 12g size, but the OG Dairy Milk Freddo is also available in the 35g “giant” variety. You will have seen them stacked up next to the equally sized Giant Caramello Koalas at your local servo.

Both Giant Freddos and Caramello Koalas are beloved staples of Australian childhood (and also my adult anxiety spirals). But I can’t help but feel that my first true Freddo love, the Strawberry Freddo, has been confined to its tiny, 12g prison for too long.

It’s high time the choccy gods at Cadbury made my Giant Strawberry Freddo dreams a reality in more than just ice cream form. At the very least, they could bring back the now-defunct Strawberry Freddo twin packs that used to come in Cadbury’s fundraising boxes (which I definitely did not appreciate enough as a child).

Can you imagine the positive impact it could have on a country that’s been put through the absolute ringer over the last couple of years? How much it would help the endangered native wildlife Freddo Frogs support? How much joy it would bring me to see those big strawberry boys on the shelves at my local Woolies?

I’m not saying a Giant Strawberry Freddo Frog will solve all our problems, but I’m not not saying that either.

And I’m clearly not the only one who feels this way. A change.org petition I stumbled across in the course of my research (read: repeatedly Googling ‘strawberry Freddo giant size’ in hopes they already existed without my knowledge) states, “Who doesn’t love a Strawberry Freddo Frog? Their [sic] hard to come by and the closest we’ve come to getting them on a regular basis is the Cadbury Snack block”.

The petition is actually calling for the release of a strawberry Dairy Milk block a la the Caramello, Turkish delight, and peppermint varieties already available – and tbh it’s not a terrible idea – but they’re bang-on when they say Strawberry Freddos are hard to come by.

Sure, I could buy a bag of fun-size Strawberry Freddo Frogs and cram a handful of the 12g Freddos in my mouth at once, but we all know it wouldn’t hit the same as a single giant-size strawberry boy, so don’t even try to convince me. Lord knows I don’t need the encouragement.

I reached out to the Freddo Frog purveyors at Cadbury to ask if they had any plans to release Giant Strawberry Freddo Frogs in future, along with why it hasn’t been on the cards before. I just like to use my platform to highlight the issues that matter, you know?

Unfortunately, I didn’t hear back in time for this article to be published, but my hope is that’s because all the bigwigs at Cadbury have heard the people’s calls for Giant Strawberry Freddos and rushed them into production. Watch this space.
