“Vote, don’t vote, I won’t meddle. But I simply say, if he says these things, this man is not a Christian.”

Wise words coming straight from the Vatican’s OG, Pope Francis about Republican candidate in the United States’ presidential race, Donald Trump.

Turns out Trump’s ideas for making America great again by introducing stricter immigration laws, or basically not letting any foreigners into United States territory has made the Pope’s blood boil. In the Pope’s mind – remember he is a mouthpiece for Christianity/Jesus/God – Trump cannot claim to be Christian if he is dismissing and refusing to aid those migrating to the US.

Grumpy Trumpy was quick to fire back at the Pope:

“For a religious leader to question a person’s faith is disgraceful… I am proud to be a Christian and as president I will not allow Christianity to be consistently attacked and weakened.”

Wait, Trump, you’re not President. So much for that humbleness you once described…

This battle between ye old faithful and the media-hungry-attention-junkie started when the Pope went on a little tour of the borders of Mexico, going on to state that it is a horror that so many people are fleeing violence and violent places worldwide. The Pope dubbed it “a human tragedy” in a mass that he hosted for 300,000 people near the US border.

It’s at this location that Trump apparently wants to build a ‘giant wall’ to keep migrants out of the United States. Trump’s comments of the Pope were delivered with an acid tongue.

“If and when the Vatican is attacked by ISIS, which as everyone knows is ISIS’s ultimate trophy, I can promise you that the Pope would have only wished and prayed that Donald Trump would have been president because this would not have happened.”

Sweet merciful Jesus, say it isn’t so.

Trump has continued to lash out at the Pope, accusing Mexican authorities of only showing the Pope “one side of the story” as well as using the Pope as a “pawn”. This isn’t the first time that Trump has used the “pawn” card.

The Pope, an open critic of the capitalism that is often personified by Trump, wasn’t offended by the comments when he was asked about it after his visit in Mexico.

“Am I a pawn of the Mexican government? I leave that to your judgement, to the people to judge.”

Unfortunately for the Pope, and the majority of the Christian faith, other Republicans and American Catholic figures have come forward to Trump’s aid. They defend Trump’s ideologies and criticise the Pope’s comments of Trump. Comments include this absolute gem from Jeb Bush (George Dubbya’s kid brother):

“That’s not an un-Christian thing to do, to make sure that people don’t come across our border illegally. That’s a just thing to do.”

The bitter feud has sparked the most glorious hashtag: #MakeTheVaticanGreatAgain. The people of twitter have imagined a world where The Pope and Trump are political rivals. If you need a laugh, seriously go and check it out, there’s no way on God’s green earth that you won’t crack a smile.

Personally, I’ll be loving thy neighbour until the cows come home. I hope Bushy-Wushy, Grumpy Trumpy and other fear mongering political figures have the good sense to at least start to do the same.
