President Kanye – is it as silly as we think?
We’ve all heard about Kanye’s announcement at the VMA’s a few days ago, and all laughed at, and ridiculed the idea of the most self-obsessed person in the world running for office in 2020. But is it as ridiculous as we’ve made it out to be? Could Kanye West actually be President, and could he do a good job?

The 21 time Grammy recipient is perceived by polar opposites. You either love him, or you hate him. His music is iconic. ‘Gold Digger’ being a modern day classic, along with other hits such as ‘Touch the Sky’ and ‘Stronger’. You have to hand it to him, he has been incredibly successful despite all the haters. He’s strong against the tide. He knows how to deal with people against him and still thrive. In his own words, “na na na that that don’t kill me, can only make me stronger.” Isn’t this something which makes a good politician? Look at Tony Abbott, who is currently the most hated person in the country. Being a good leader means that even under constant fire, you’re still able to push through and get the job done, something which Kanye has clearly proven he is able to do.
Kanye is a determined person. Working tirelessy, he has released six albums which have all been incredibly successful. But not just with his music. In an interview with the NY Times in 2013, West tells of how he missed out on basketball teams in middle school: “Seventh grade, I wanted to be on the basketball team. I didn’t get on the team, so that summer I practiced. I was on the summer league. My team won the championship; I was the point guard. And then when I went for eighth grade, I practiced and I hit every free throw, every layup, and the next day I looked on this chart, and my name wasn’t on it. I asked the coach what’s up, and they were like, “You’re just not on it.” I was like, “But I hit every shot.” The next year — I was on the junior team when I was a freshman, that’s how good I was.”
Politicians are all the same these days. Deceitful, boring, duplicitous, middle-agers with law degrees or arts degrees, walking around with a rod up their ass. But Kanye could be a fresh change of pace in the political world. The outlandish rapper would completely shake up Washington, perhaps in a good way. The younger generation would really get into politics, he’d have them thinking about new policies and bills on the floor. The older generation are always complaining this generation is uneducated and have no interest in serious manners. If Kanye were elected, the US president would be a pin-up on so many bedroom walls; he’d be a teenager’s favourite person. They would pay a huge amount of attention to politics and start to question what’s happening in DC.
Complaining about politicians going back on their word is common play these days. Or being frustrated when politicians act as someone they clearly aren’t. Like when Julia Gillard pretends to be a footy fan, or when Bill Shorten pretends to know what he’s talking about. But with Mr West (that has a nice ring to it), you know what you’re getting. He hasn’t changed his personality. He’s got tickets on himself, so he backs himself in and is relentless, something which is an essential quality in a politician. He’s a serious man. It’s literally a news story when he smiles, so you know you’re not going to get any bullshit. Kanye West is pretty open about how he thinks he’s the best thing since sliced bread, and that he can do nothing wrong, which embodies the mindset of the very people he has ambitions of leading.
Kanye could be the change we need in politics, and could certainly attract like-minded, determined individuals into Washington to take politics forward. So let’s not completely dismiss the possibility of President West just yet, if you stand back and seriously consider the concept, it’s not as silly at it initially seemed.
