As inflation hits Australia, Aussies are coming up with creative ways to save a buck.

From skipping a morning coffee to missing the smashed avo toast, some are looking at ‘viral hacks’ online to battle hard economic times. Some Aussies are so desperate that News.com reported that shoppers are now cutting the stalks off their broccoli in-store to save a bit of coin.

To help Aussies around the country, we’ve picked out the hottest tips from TLC’s America’s Cheapskates to help fund your boujee lifestyle!

1. Cook your dinner in a dishwasher

Up for a cheeky soggy lasagne? Extreme Cheapskate Stephanie shows how she utilises her dishwasher as an oven, allowing her to save energy, electricity, and gas.

2. Live in your place of employment 

If you can’t afford rent, why not just live in your office space! It’s economically savvy and you get to miss peak hour. Larry is a mechanic who has chosen to live in his garage. He bathes in his garage, eats in it, and has his first date inside of it! All of this just to save some money.

3. Get married in a school gymnasium 

For millennials, zillennials, and whoever may be looking to save money on their wedding costs, look no further than your local high school. Shelley, who had an overall budget of USD$1000 for her daughter’s wedding, cut costs by snatching a high-school gymnasium as a venue for free! What a steal.

4. If you’re lucky enough to have a jacuzzi, use it as a shower 

At least you will be warm? Extreme Cheapskate Todd also takes the opportunity when he showers to heat up his food with the jacuzzi heat and uses it to wash his dishes. Multi-purpose!

5.  Steal precious items from your housemates and then re-gift them at Christmas 

A controversial one but easily doable. Christmas is one of the most expensive holidays of the year and one way to save money is to sneakily take an item from your loved one and re-gift it at Chrissy time! Remember to not throw away the wrapping paper, you’re gonna re-use it next year.

6. Cancel your gym membership and work out at your local Rebel

I mean they have the fitness equipment on display, might as well put it to good use! Extreme Cheapskate Jeni gets her exercise at her local sports goods store by ‘demoing’ the exercise bicycle two times a week.

7. Use your hair as dental floss 

Hair falls out all the time, whether you brush it or it just kinda falls to the ground. Make sure it’s a clean piece of hair before placing it in your mouth to get rid of any unwanted tooth decay.

8.  Use newspaper or old catalogues as toilet paper 

Might be a little rough but anything to save a bit of coin! Also, make sure you don’t flush it, you may flood your house…

9. Swap your tuna fish for cat food 

It’s almost the same thing! I mean, if cats can eat it, why can’t humans? Extreme Cheapskate Aimee confesses that she saves 50 cents each time she uses cat food for a ‘tuna fish sando’. Meow meow.

10. Prepare for an afterlife buried with your partner 

Coffins, funerals, and all that can get super expensive! Why not save your family the hassle and asked to be buried with your loved one, inside the same coffin! Extreme Cheapskate couple Rick and Krissa have got half-off one of their funerals after they bought a coffin to be buried together in. Spooky but romantic!
