Selfie-sticks, camera phones, editing apps, GoPros, light-field photography – every schlep with an Instagram and a point-and-shoot is a photographic genius these days.

Gallivanting across the planet and capturing your adventures for all to witness has never been easier, but what ever happened to the purest way – the best way – of capturing an awesome travel selfie: the good old DSLR self-timer?

Okay, so it might not necessarily be the most efficient use of time/space, and with all these new fandangle gadgets and iPhone apps you might not see the point in fiddling around with complex 10-second timers and shot line-ups when you could just as well ask one of your travel buddies to take a happy snap. But what if your mate’s photos almost always turn out like messy, overexposed, photographic nightmares? What if you want to wander off for half the day and explore a city on your own? What if you want more than just your smiley balloon-head dominating the shot? But above all, what if you don’t want to look like an idiot with a selfie-stick?

These interesting and unique images from some of Australia’s top young travel writers, bloggers and photographers show us that the DSLR self-timer portrait is indeed alive and well, capturing some of the best travel self-portrait moments where even the longest selfie-stick falls short. iPhone cam eat your heart out…
