PSA: Your Teen Faves Rupert Grint & Lindsay Lohan Were On A British TV Show Together
Folks, our national love of Lindsay Lohan doesn’t need to end just because The Masked Singer is finishing up. You can continue to watch Lindsay from the comfort of your own home, if you would just turn on Sick Note on Netflix.
Sick Note, starring none other than Ron Weasley himself, as well as Nick Frost of Shaun of the Dead fame, ran for two seasons on Sky in the UK, and on Netflix. Lindsay Lohan joined the cast for season two in 2018. And it seems like nobody else watched it?
There’s a real dearth of criticism about the show – Paste slammed it – probably because it wasn’t objectively that great. But we’re not here for greatness. We’re here for the combination of a wild af premise, with the presence of not one, but two (!!) of our teen idols: Rupert Grint and Lindsay Lohan.
Warning: this whole story is spoilers, so if that is a problem for you, pls move right along.
For now, we’re going ruin only the first episode of the first season of Sick Note. I cannot stress this enough. This is just the first episode.
So we’re introduced to Daniel (Rupert Grint), who finds out from his doctor, Dr. Glennis, (Nick Frost), that he has cancer. Suddenly Daniel’s life is actually good – his humdrum insurance company office job has un-fired him, his gf, Becca, has un-dumped him… And then his doc tells him that jk, jk, he’s actually completely fine. Instead of coming clean, he decides to lie about having cancer. That’s the premise.
But, no, no, no, it doesn’t stop there – his best mate, Ash, is sleeping with Becca. When Daniel comes home from work unexpectedly, Ash climbs out the window to avoid getting caught in the act. And while he’s standing on a ledge, Ash overhears Daniel talking to his online gamin’ buddy (who will be more relevant in S2) about how he’s faking cancer.
Ofc, in that moment, Daniel discovers the truth about his gf and best mate. And then Ash falls off the ledge… Is he dead now? Maybe! Daniel sure thinks so! And all of this plays out in less than half an hour of television.
That’s the first episode. Imagine how the rest of the six-episode season has to escalate from there.
Season two then has to go even further – bringing in Lindsay Lohan, rockin’ a sharp bob, as the new CEO of Daniel’s work, Katerina. She’s not interested in insurance like her dildo-loving dad, she just wants to breastfeed gorillas, and appears severely anxious yet cutthroat.
She straight-up does a murder mid-season to avoid being blackmailed. You have to watch this thing. I’m not willing to ruin it for you, but know that this happens only mid-way through season two.
There are another FOUR episodes to follow.
Blackmail, gorillas, faking cancer, psychotic drug dealers and a conspiracy-theory-loving cop (you’ll get to those on your own) – everything is here, and everything is very confusing.
The point of this, ultimately, is to say, watch Sick Note. Watch Lindsay Lohan put in a not-bad performance, taking an acting role for the first time since a one-ep guest spot on Two Broke Girls. Watch Rupert Grint play a somehow-lazier, morally questionable Ron Weasley. Watch Nick Frost bumble along, but always try his best.
It’s totally worth it – even just to confuse your younger fanboy/girl self. Have a happy LiLo binge weekend!
