Star Wars: The Force Awakens Surpasses Avatar To Become Top-Grossing Film Of All Time In America
It was only a matter of time…
Disney have officially confirmed that they’re laughing their way to the bank. In a statement released today, they’ve announced that Star Wars: The Force Awakens has surpassed Avatar to become the highest-grossing film of all time in America.
The seventh Star Wars instalment has trumped the US$760.5 million earned by the James Cameron directed film. Much like Avatar was, Star Wars is also a clear front-runner to bag a swag of Oscars.
In terms of the overall worldwide box office record, The Force Awakens still has some work to do. Raking in a cool US$1.56 billion globally, The Force Awakens is still acres behind Avatar (US$2.79 billion) and another James Cameron classic, Titanic (US$2.19 billion).
The film now sits in fourth position in the all-time worldwide box office sales.Considering it was only released three weeks ago, there’s a good chance it will continue to climb up the list.
