This Kid Took A Selfie With Justin Timberlake At The Super Bowl & Has Become An Instant Meme
By all accounts, Justin Timberlake’s performance at the Super Bowl today was deeply underwhelming.
Who cares, though, because we all know the real winner of the Super Bowl half time performance is the meme that emerges from it. In 2015, it was Katy Perry’s awkwardly dancing left shark that captured the hearts of the nation and saved the day; this year, it’s Selfie Kid.
If you didn’t watch it live (can’t blame you), here’s what you need to know. Basically, in the middle of the performance, Timberlake was dancing through the crowd, and ended up next to an endearingly awkward kid.
Timberlake’s throwing his arm around him, there are huge cameras in his face, and everyone around him is dancing enthusiastically. So the kid does the only thing he can think to do in this situation: takes a hasty selfie with Timberlake, shuffles awkwardly for a few beats, and then picks up his phone and stares desperately into the screen. In that moment, he was all of us.

I mean, nothing captures the entire world’s indifference towards Justin Timberlake more than this image. Unsurprisingly, it’s already a huge meme.

People are already comparing him to Left Shark, cementing his place in Super Bowl fame. Whoever he is, wherever he is, he’s gonna have a wild day at school on Monday.
