While everyone was happily chowing down their chocolate bunnies over the Easter weekend, news broke that made us lose faith in love: Taylor Swift and her long-term boyfriend Joe Alwyn had broken up.

Of course, the signs were there: Joe was nowhere to be seen in the crowd on her Eras tour, and she was recently filmed crying while performing ‘Champagne Problems’ which was co-written by her now ex.

But regardless of the evidence, no one wanted to believe that Taylor hadn’t actually found her ‘End Game’ with Joe. After all, Taylor’s longest relationship was starkly different to her other public romances, as she made an effort to keep their relationship private and never posted a single photo together on social media throughout their six-year affair.

Sadly, article after article has been published in recent days with ‘sources’ and ‘friends of Taylor’ confirming that the couple is, in fact, donezo.

So what actually happened? Well, much like Taylor’s short-lived relationship with Tom ‘tank top’ Hiddleston, the answer is confusing. A simple Google search of “Taylor Swift breakup” generates around 126 million results, with many answers contradicting one another.

As neither Taylor nor Joe has publicly spoken about their breakup (yet), I’ve compiled a bunch of information from ‘sources’ and ‘friends’ who have aired the couple’s dirty laundry and dished why they split. Oh yeah, and I threw a wild Reddit theory in there for good measure. Take of that what you will!

Possible Break-Up Reason #1: the relationship ran its course

ET was the first news outlet to report on Taylor and Joe’s breakup, and their ~*source*~ stressed that there was no spicy reason behind why the couple decided to end their six-year relationship. The publication claimed that they broke up a few weeks ago, but said it was amicable and “not dramatic”.

The insider told ET: “The relationship had just run its course. It’s why [Alwyn] hasn’t been spotted at any  [Eras Tour] shows.”

Short and, err, not so sweet.

Possible Break-Up Reason #2: Joe was jealous of Taylor’s career

In Daily Mail’s typical salacious style, they reported that Taylor and Joe’s split was messier than it was originally made out to be. Despite the fact that the two celebs started dating way back in 2016, their source said Joe was threatened by how much Taylor’s career took off after the pandemic.

This concept is slightly puzzling considering Taylor’s 2018 Reputation Stadium Tour was the highest-grossing North American concert tour in history, and she’d racked up ten Grammy awards before anyone even knew what COVID was. Alas, DM’s source had a lengthy chin wag about why they believe the couple was destined for splitsville.

“The bottom line for the difficulties in their relationship was that Taylor’s career took priority over Joe’s – which can be awkward for a couple when it’s not balanced,” the anonymous source began. “This drove them apart and ultimately, they both realised they were not on the same page anymore.

“It’s been hard for Joe trying to make it in Hollywood and not quite becoming leading man material while dating one of the most famous women in the world over the last six years.

“It was easier during the pandemic when it was just the two of them, but once things returned to normal, Taylor Swift the superstar emerged, and their differences were even more apparent.

“They really made a go of it and tried everything they could but ultimately were unable to save the relationship.”

I’m still not quite sold on this one, but then again, everything I know about Taylor has been fed to me through the interwebs, so who am I to say?

Possible Break-Up Reason #3: Their personalities were too different

American entertainment outlet People echoed Entertainment Tonight’s amicable theory but threw some mildly warm tea in the mix by claiming that the couple’s relationship has hit a few speedbumps over the years.

“They’ve had rough patches before and always worked things out, so friends thought they would take some time apart but eventually come back together,” People’s source said re: the breakup. They added that ultimately Joe and Taylor “weren’t the right fit for one another.”

Possible Break-Up Reason #4: Taylor Swift posed in a photo with Rośe from Blackpink

Because deep-diving into Taylor’s love life is exhausting, breakups are depressing, and mysterious sources only hold so much weight, Swifites over on Reddit have come up with their own, rather outlandish, hypothesis.

There’s a theory floating around the internet that every time Blackpink member Rosé takes a photo with a celebrity who’s in a steady relationship, they break up shortly after.

For example, Gigi Hadid posed for a pic with Rosé and then split with Zayn Malik, and Kendall Jenner snapped a photo with her before calling it a day with long-term boo Devin Booker.

Taylor and Rosé took a happy snap at the VMA’s in August last year, and now the curse appears to have struck her relationship with Joe. The evidence is admittedly compelling, see for yourself:

So there you have it! Taylor and Joe’s conscious uncoupling could be anything from a K-Pop curse to a simple, amicable choice.
