Fans Are Freaking Out Over The Title Of One Of Taylor Swift’s New Songs

In case you missed it, for about 46 hours every single Swiftie was puzzling. But not any normal puzzle – a puzzle that would unlock ‘Taylor’s Vault’.

The singer dropped a total of 89 word jumbles to solve, with the prize of finding them all being intel about her 1989 album re-release. And of course, die-hard fans did nothing else until they cracked the code.

After the puzzles had been completed, a voiceover from Swift announced: “Oh look! You did it! You unlocked the 1989 (Taylor’s Version) vault, and now I am so excited to share the new vault track titles with you.” (It was at this point that you likely heard a high-pitched scream rattle its way across the globe.)

The newly announced songs are:

1. ‘Is It Over Now?’

2. ”Now That We Don’t Talk’

3. ‘Say Don’t Go’

4. ‘Suburban Legends’

5. ‘Slut!’

Yes, you read that last one correctly. ‘Slut!’ With an exclamation mark, nonetheless.

Even those who don’t know Taylor’s back catalogue super well will know that this title is a bit of a step change from her usual tracks. Most songs are about love, revenge and nostalgia, with a gentle dusting of fucking the patriarchy, but it seems this track might be focussing solely on that last point. Icon behaviour.

Taylor has been candid before about the labels she’s been given in the past, and with so much unfair criticism levelled at her for her dating life, I assume this track will be reclaiming the label of ‘slut’ in some way.

In 2016, Taylor referenced the ‘slut-shaming’ she copped during her career, saying: “If I could talk to my 19-year-old self I would say, ‘You’re gonna date like a normal 20-something should be allowed to, but you’re going to be a national lightning rod for slut-shaming’.”

Okay, now I’m thinking it’s a love letter to her younger self – taking the vibes of ‘Never Grow Up’ and mashing it together with ‘The Man’. Oooft.

Of course, Twitter (or X, or whatever other brain fart name Elon has come up with this week) had millions of thoughts and theories as to what ‘Slut!’ is going to be about. Here are some of my favourite suggestions:

“When you google ‘taylor swift slut’ now her song will come up instead of slut shaming about her and her dating life,” one person wrote

“‘Slut!’ is for all the Swifties who stayed on here from 2012-2016 and fought in the trenches against those allegations from fake fans / haters / journalists on Twitter.”

“Well. I think we can all agree that ‘Slut!’ by Taylor Swift will either break my heart or bring it back to life,” another declared.

We’ll get the official heartmake/heartbreak diagnosis on October 27, when 1989 (Taylor’s Version) is finally released.
