If you’ve missed Juliette Herrera’s presence in your life since her time on The Bachelor came to an end earlier this year, then we have great news for you! Juliette is releasing a short series on IGTV, aimed to inspire and empower young adults.

With a focus on personal journeys, uncomfortable topics, and featured guests, Juliette’s series Not My Lyric premiered today with a representation-themed episode, unpacking the underrepresented media landscape for women of colour.

Episode one saw Juliette joined by Maria Thattil, a Miss Universe Finalist, as they discussed all things representation and shared their own personal journeys of abandoning their cultural heritage out of a place of shame or self-hate, before learning to embrace their cultural roots and celebrate what makes them unique.

As an intro, Juliette talks about how growing up she didn’t see herself represented within the media she consumed, and Maria first touches on how hard it was to find makeup that suited her skin tone as a teen. “Growing up, I couldn’t find makeup that was catered to my skin tone,” Maria said. “When I was going to school formals, when I was shopping in the makeup aisles like any 14 or 15-year-old would, they didn’t have makeup in my colour.”

“Quite recently I’ve walked into luxury makeup stores and I’m too dark to find a bronzer – and mind you, I’m quite in the middle of the spectrum so if it’s hard for me, how is it for other people?” Maria asked.

From there, the two women discuss other issues they’ve faced growing up as people of colour in Australia, challenging the mould, and embracing their cultural heritage, and it’s a compelling watch.
