Viewers Are Officially Over All The Overprotective Dads & Bros On ‘The Bachelor’
On tonight’s hometown episode of The Bachelor, it felt like every brother and dad absolutely went in on Locky and at times it was uncomfortable to watch. Are we still doing this? I am TIRED.
With the exception of Izzy’s family (who were all women, surprise!), during tonight’s episode every family had an overprotective man trying to make Locky prove his worthiness through intimidation. First there was Irena’s brother saying “get your hands off my sister!” over Zoom, before warning Locky that he’s previously chased potential love interests away with a pitchforks. Then Bec’s brother ripped into Locky (although at times justified), and finally Bella’s dad just straight-up interrogated Locky like he was a member of the CIA.
I hate the whole patriarchal protective older brother crap. If men were raised to respect women this wouldn’t even be a thing. Fricken male privilege #TheBachelorAU

We’ve seen this on The Bachelor time and time again and increasingly the hometowns episodes receives the same criticism from viewers: women are not their dad’s or brother’s property.
By contrast, the mums on this show rarely act as aggressive when grilling the Bachy in question. In tonight’s episode, while Izzy’s mum had her reservations about Locky, the way she spoke to him was very different to how the other brothers and dads approached him. There’s being protective and then there’s acting like you have some kind of ownership over your sister or daughter.
It’s gross, it’s textbook toxic masculinity, and it’s time for these kinds of storylines to be retired.
Bachy fans are officially over all the overprotective dads and brothers on The Bachelor:
MEN YOU DO NOT OWN YOUR SISTERS/DAUGHTERS. This woman is in her 30s. Her consent to him touching her is all that's needed #TheBachelorAU

God forbid we don't treat adult women like a man's property in 2020 #TheBachelorAU pic.twitter.com/2JDRWGpmwV

Can we stop with the mostly men in the families acting like they have ownership over women? My dad and brothers would N E V E R act like that and I would be livid if they did #TheBachelorAU

what you need is someone who will EMPOWER you, not protect you #TheBachelorAU

Imagine your brother telling your boyfriend, ‘get your hands off my sister’ and you thinking this is perfectly normal behaviour. #TheBachelorAU

The overprotective brother/father is such a tired stereotype that stems from toxic masculinity and the illusion of control. It’s fine to be protective but this is too much #TheBachelorAU

can all these over-protective men fuck off? leave your daughter/sister alone to get some dick if she wants to #TheBachelorAU

Imagine being so mediocre white man you control your sister’s decisions. Gross. #TheBachelorAU
