Baby Yoda in 'The Mandalorian' season 2, episode 6, 'The Tragedy'

‘The Mandalorian’ S2E6 Recap: Uh Oh

Brought to you by Disney+

"The Mandalorian" season two is streaming now, only on Disney+

After the last few jam-packed episodes of The Mandalorian, I was kind of expecting something a little light.

This article contains spoilers for The Mandalorian season 2, episode 6, so please be careful if you haven’t seen it yet!

The last episode alone was huge! We didn’t just learn the Child’s real name but our favourite duo tracked down a Jedi who was busy trying to hunt down Grand Admiral Thrawn, a big baddy of the Empire. For Star Wars buffs (not me), that name alone caused shivers: to paraphrase Taylor Swift, baby, there’s a lot of bad blood here.

The Jedi wasn’t too keen to take Baby Yoda as a new mentee, so Mando’s mission continued. And that’s where we find them in episode 6 — travelling to Typhon to find a seeing stone so the Child can reconnect with other Jedi.

Surely there’d be a few hijinks along the way, right? Maybe another egg diversion? Nope: the duo’s sights are set on a Stonehenge-like configuration just a few minutes into this episode.

Looks Jedi-y, I guess?

We do get an unbearably cute intro though, where Mando tests out calling Baby Yoda by his real name and gets a real kick out of seeing the kid’s green ears prick up, before sighing in resignation. Mando prepares to say bye.

“You’re very special, kid,” he tells the Child. “We’re going to find that place you belong and they’re going to take real good care of you.”

So sweet, right? Then the title card comes in to announce Chapter 14 is called ‘The Tragedy’. Gulp.

It’s Not Just An Ambush, It’s A Double Ambush

The duo can’t land right at the stone, so end up jetpacking there.

At first, when they arrive, Baby Yoda seems more concerned with watching butterflies than using the Force to call out to Jedis across the galaxy.

Okay, I can’t decide who I want to be more. All I know is that this is going straight to my 2021 vision board.

But then, something clicks, and he’s surrounded by a blue Force-field that’s shooting up into the sky — and a ship appears almost immediately. Mando tries to take the Child with him to investigate, but can’t break through the field.

He encounters two characters who’ll be familiar to any Star Wars fan, who have teamed up to find Mando and get back the Beskar armour he took from that phony, handsome Marshal (Timothy Olyphant) in the season 2 premiere.

Mando keeps trying to reach Baby Yoda, but not even Beskar can mess with the Force.

With a sniper set on the Child, Mando has no choice but to drop his weapons and jetpack — but before anything else can happen, they’re interrupted when another ship lands and stormtroopers rush out.

Making new friends

Remember that tracking device planted by the shady mechanic back in episode 4? The Empire has followed Mando and the Child to Typhon, and are armed and ready to go. And with Baby Yoda stuck behind that Force-field, the trio make a deal: if Mando promises to return the armour, they’ll help protect the Child.

These action scenes are glorious: this is the most hand-to-hand combat we’ve seen all season, and our trio all have very different fighting styles. One even uses a boulder to crush a heap of stormtroopers — we almost feel sorry for them. Almost.

Do NOT try to outrun a boulder, unless you are Indiana Jones.

Between the three of them, they make light work of the hoard of soldiers, who try to escape before Mando’s new friend shoots one missile into the sky and destroys both ships as they’re flying away. It’s pretty impressive, but not even these fighters can take what comes next.

Moff Gideon watches from afar in his ship, and sends down some next-level fighters, prompting the tragedy part of this episode. First, they explode Mando’s ship, the Razor Crest — then, something truly beyond-the-pale, which sets back Mando’s mission considerably.

RIP the Razor Crest.

With no ship, Mando turns to his new friends: and off they go to restore order. They fly off to Nevarro, where Cara Dune is now a Marshal.

Mando asks for her help to bust out a mercenary named Migs Mayfeld (played by comedian Bill Burr), who was imprisoned in season 1 after he tried to double-cross our hero. Despite that, Mando reckons Migs could help track down Moff Gideon, so it’s worth the risk.

Two episodes remain this season, and ‘The Tragedy’ just took things to dramatic new heights. Thankfully, Mando has a whole gang of mercenaries on his side now, but will it be enough to take on Moff Gideon?

Meanwhile, the Child’s Force-beacon ended, suggesting he reached someone or something. Will they come along for the ride too, or did he just Force-dial even more trouble?
