The New Meme Created To Stop Taylor Swift Suing You
Taylor Swift and her beloved legal team are a tad on the sensitive side when it comes to protecting the artist’s work. Their implementation of Swift’s digital intellectual property strategy is cutthroat to say the least.
In 2015, her legal squad have literally gone about trademarking phrases from her gangbusters 1989 album. That includes word combinations like “This Sick Beat”, “Shake it off” and “Wildest Dream”. They haven’t been quietly sitting on this either. According to BuzzFeed, “Swift’s team allegedly issued a cease and desist letter to a podcast who mentioned Swift’s ‘Wildest Dreams’ video.” They’ve contact numerous others that have casually broadcasted these phrases too (our disclaimer below).
It gets worse. According to NetNames, after a recent law suit against the use of Swift’s name in a url registered by a guitar teacher, the legal squad are buying up domain combinations to beat people at their own game. In the past few months, they’ve purchased a whole heap of url combinations, including many .porn, .adult sites. This (obviously) includes the highly sought after: www.ITaughtTaylorSwiftToGiveHead.com. ?!
However this brand protection strategy is not only proving to be outrageously expensive, it’s ultimately more damaging to the Swift brand, as proven by the latest online meme.
In response to this protectionism, Tumblr users are taking lawyers requests further than they were intended by crediting use of the phrases at every possible moment, and the trend is catching on with the phrase:
