The 2017 Oscar Nominations Are Here With More Diversity And Plenty Of Aussie Flavour

The nominations for the 2017 Academy awards have landed, highlighting all the standout performances in film that are up for the prestigious ‘Oscar’.

This year’s Oscar nominations arrived this morning, and with a collective sigh of relief, they’re that little bit more diverse and representative. The nominations are chosen by over 6,000 voting industry members including hundreds of eligible films, actors, actresses, directors, cinematographers, editors and composers.

Following the #OscarsSoWhite controversy that rightfully dominated discussion around the awards over the past two years, the academy took action to boost numbers with a more diverse and representative panel. The academy have also introduced the “goal to double number of diverse members by 2020” because they’re boardroom meetings previously looked a little something like this:

Well, today it looks like they’re efforts are working. In 2017, the categories are led by Barry Jenkins‘ luminous coming-of-age portrait Moonlight, Denzel Washington‘s Fences and Theodore Melfi‘s Hidden Figures.

Meanwhile. there’s also a whole heap of Aussies scoring great praise in Hollywood. Australian drama film Lion, scooped up a whopping six nominations, including a nod for the ‘best film’ category along with Nicole Kidman as ‘best supporting actress’. Meanwhile, Mel Gibson is up for his role in‘Hacksaw Ridge’  while Tanna, a Romeo and Juliet-style film set in Vanuatu, scored Australia’s first ever nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. Good job fam.

But the nomination glory that everyone’s talking about this morning is ‘La La Land‘ which leads the 2017 Oscar nominations with a massive 14 nods. The critically acclaimed musical movie equalled 1997’s ‘Titanic’ record for the most Academy Award nominations in a single year.

Along with the Best Picture, both Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone are up for Oscars for respective Best Actor in a Leading Role and Best Actress in a Leading Role awards and director Damien Chazelle nominated for the ‘Best Director’ category.

Other highlights included science fiction film ‘Arrival’ which is up for eight awards and ‘Moonlight‘ tallying up seven noms, including a nod for Naomie Harris and Mahershala Ali. Ali will be competing with ‘Lion’s’ Dev Patel for the best ‘Actor in a Supporting Role’.
