Everyone’s Confessing Their Dumb Shit On TikTok To The Tune Of ‘The Reason’ By Hoobastank

For forgotten musicians, TikTok can be an incredibly powerful platform.

Thanks to the ‘For You’ algorithm and the creativity of its users, every now and then an old song resurfaces for a new trend. It’s already happened with Jessie J’s ‘Price Tag’ but on the cards today is The Reason’ by Hoobastank.

You know the one. It was in the Friends finale, it was on Singstar but in case your memory has failed you, allow the iconic music video to jog your memory: 

The 2004 single is getting a TikTok resurgence all thanks to the tune’s opening line “I’m not a perfect person.” And, as you can probably guess, TikTokers are spilling all the reasons why they, too, are not perfect people. 

The trend essentially works like this: A TikTok user lip-syncs the opening line while looking dishevelled as they caption their video with an incredibly niche reason as to why they aren’t perfect. And yes, some of the reasons in question are hilarious.

Lead vocalist, Doug Robb, is seen to be staring bewildered and solemn at a framed Platinum Hoobastank album while the song plays in the background. The band captioned their TikTok, “Realising 20 years later that you named your band Hoobastank.” 

Hey, at least they can poke fun at themselves. What even is a Hoobastank?
