Netflix has blessed us again with an absolutely wild new book adaption: The Woman In The Window. I am obsessed.

The Woman In The Window is told from the perspective of agoraphobic, Anna (Amy Adams), a psychologist with a dark past who spends her days inside the confines of her town house, and her only semblance of social interaction is with her therapist or watching her neighbours from her window. After a random interaction with a neighbour, Jane (Julianne Moore), Anna becomes obsessed with keeping tabs on a family living across her street.

If you’ve seen the film, you will likely fall into two categories: you’ll adore the movie for being so shamelessly camp, or you’ll be bloody confused by it. After viewing The Woman In The Window, I fall somewhere in between. As a fan of the book, which is a dark and twisted thriller, I was a little taken aback by how funny I found the film adaption. Adam’s performance is so over the top and ridiculous at times, you really just have to strap yourself in and go along for the ride.

The film currently has an abysmal score of 26% on Rotten Tomatoes, so while it has found a small cult following from fans, it’s far from a fave among critics.

It actually fitting that the book adaption is a bit of a mess, given the book author Dan Mallory (pen name A. J. Finn) has a wildly controversial history. Following the blockbuster success of Mallory’s first (and last) novel, it was revealed in an exposé published in The New Yorker that he decided to go under a pen name due to all the bridges he had burnt in the publishing industry. Mallory is alleged to have lied about his mum dying of cancer and that he had a brain tumour, as well as other white lies including faking a British accent and claiming he had worked with Tina Fey (he hadn’t).

The New Yorker also relayed an especially disturbing story — alleged by a colleague — that Malory had left cups of urine in his boss’ office. The story is so bonkers that it’s being turned into a TV series, with Mallory being played by Jake Gyllenhaal.

So yep, there’s a lot to unpack from the inspiration for this film! Whether you loved or hated the movie, you will enjoy these A+ memes.
