The nomad thrives off an undisguised passage of life; rawness, honesty and tension lie between him and his surroundings. He must be free. He must be adaptable. He must be mobile. He must be transient in order to survive. It’s no surprise that emerging Melbourne label, COLDSYSTEM, have titled their debut winter collection NOMADIC — a collection where anthropology meets fashion to exude the true spirit of the modern nomad.

Against the bleakness of a Melbourne winter, designer Gabriel Waterman created COLDSYSTEM with a core for simple yet progressive design, along with premium high quality fabrics that advocate for the environment and social ethics. “I created COLDSYSTEM out of a necessity, due to the lack of labels creating clothes for the harsh Melburnian winters,” Waterman tells TheVine.

Fusing the essence of nomadism with fashion itself, Waterman’s debut winter collection reflects a connection with the elegant craftsmanship of traditional Himalayan weaving, further connecting to the unconcealed life of a nomad, free from the constraints of contemporary materialism. Fashion has to radiate some form of spirit, yet it also must be versatile and sustainable in the interest of consumerism. COLDSYSTEM, here, have encapsulated that by adhering to the freedom of a nomad; the aesthetic of NOMADIC is loose in fitting and thus allows consumers to be free in motion and to adapt to whatever realm necessary.

From concept to design, Waterman has used his passion for anthropology to influence the development of the collection. “I have drawn on all types of traditional nomadism, paying particular attention to the herdsmen of Mongolia, where the collection’s cashmere is sourced.” NOMADIC also holds an honest aesthetic in its mild yet distinctive colour combinations, which drift life between earthen gradients inspired by nomadic attire.

Set to launch with an exclusive preview this Friday (1 May) at 136 Lygon Street Brunswick from 6:30pm – 10:00pm, NOMADIC will feature a range and male and female threads to sustain you through the imminent Melbourne winter with a true sense of nomadism.
