We Compared The British Version Of A Tim Tam To Our Beloved National Treasure

There are a few known debates when it comes to the Australia vs. UK argument of who does it best, and most of them revolve around food.

As Aussies we know Vegemite reigns supreme to Marmite. However, we accept that the British nails the tea game. Then sometimes the people in the UK just throw us a curveball that makes us question if they’re all OK.

Let’s move on from whatever is happening there.

Everyone knows pure happiness can be found as soon as one opens a packet of Double Coat Tim Tams. This is a cold, hard fact that cannot be disputed.

However, as it turns out the UK has its own version of the Tim Tam. It’s apparently a super iconic treat and if you ask anyone you know from the UK about it, they get all misty-eyed, lost in the nostalgia of their youth… or something.

Now the biscuit – known as the Penguin – is coming to Aussie shelves so we can finally compare who does the chocolate biscuits better. It must be said the Penguin was invented first, but does that make it the best? We decided to taste test to find out.

The Penguin VS. The Tim Tam:

Pros of the Penguin:

penguin biscuit
  • It’s bigger than the Tim Tam.
  • If you aren’t a massive sweet tooth, it’s not as decadent so it goes perfectly with your cuppa without being too much.
  • If you’re after more bang for your buck when it comes to the actual biscuit part, the Penguin is for you. The biscuit part is much more prominent. Someone in my office did describe it as “girthier” so make of that what you will.
  • Every packet has a Penguin joke on it!

Cons of the Penguin:

  • They are individually wrapped, so we don’t love that from an environmental perspective.
  • They don’t quite give you the SAME chocolate hit you’d get from a Tim Tam, so if you are a sweet tooth (guilty!) you may feel like something is lacking.

Pros of the Tim Tam:

  • The biscuit is softer which means the chocolate flavour really comes through more prominently.
  • Double Coat Tim Tams are honestly god’s gift to the world.

Cons of the Tim Tam:

  • I swear they get smaller in size every time I buy a packet.
  • They come with ZERO jokes. No jokes! Where are my jokes?!

Final Verdict?

Tbh, to me it wasn’t a matter of which is better, it’s more about what you’re in the mood for. It’s hard to go wrong with any chocolate biscuit. I mean, if someone was to offer me one, am I going to turn it down? I think NOT!

If you’re after that decadent happiness that only a Tim Tam can bring, then you know what to do. But if you’re after less chocolate and more biscuit, then p-p-pick up a Penguin at Coles right now, for $2.80 for a six-pack. Or just buy both, and let us know in the comments what you think is best!
