Triple J’s 2017 Hottest 100 Has Raked In A Record-Breaking Number Of Votes This Year
Shout out to all of the triple j/music enthusiasts who got involved, because this year’s Hottest 100 is going to be the biggest yet.
So it looks like the young people of Australia are pretty damn keen to be involved in the democratic ranking of 2017’s top 100 songs, with a whopping 2,386,133 votes being cast for the countdown. That’s more people than any year before. Triple j revealed that’s a 5.81% jump in the voting numbers from last year.
This definitely indicates that plenty of people are on board with the station’s choice to change the date from Australia Day out of respect for Indigenous Australians, and are still keen as hell to celebrate Australia’s fave tunes… just on a less inappropriate date.
The vote was a pretty even gender split, with women just sliding in as the majority with 51% of the votes. Men made up 48% of the votes and the total was rounded out by 1% who selected ‘other’ or ‘no answer’.
The countdown is definitely the taste of Aussie youngsters with the average age of voters at 21 years old. About half the voters aged between 18-24 and around 80% under 30 (sooo basically just spot on triple j’s demographic #nosurprises #theyouthhavespoken).
Most of the votes came from NSW (29%), Victoria (23%) and QLD (20%) with relatively lower representation from the rest of Aus but still some keen country-wide involvement. Go team!
The Hottest 100 will be airing on Saturday, January 27, backed up by the songs that just missed out (the Hottest 200) on Sunday, January 28. Meanwhile, on Sunday, Double J will be replaying the 1997 countdown, so if you’re keen for a throwback session tune into that.
Happy Hottest 100 weekend – May this be the best year yet.
