The ‘Twilight’ Director Would Cast Jacob Elordi And Jenna Ortega As Edward And Bella Today
Studios seem to be constantly cashing in by remaking their biggest hits. There’s all sorts of projects in the works, from Hitchcock’s The Birds to the 1987 classic Dirty Dancing, and of course, Disney’s money-making scheme of turning all their animated films into live-action remakes.
It’s a guaranteed cash grab because you draw original fans in with the promise of nostalgia, tap into a new audience, and to be perfectly blunt, there’s often a huge crowd of people who hate-watch them too. The latest teen film to get the remake treatment is Twilight, the franchise based on the Stephanie Meyer books which introduced sparkly vampires into our lives.
It also spawned a real-life relationship between Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, along with their creepy onscreen vampiric baby Renesmee. The first Twilight film was released in 2009 in Australia, with the final film Breaking Dawn Part 2 hitting cinemas in 2012.
Lionsgate TV has apparently made a deal with Sinead Daly to write a new TV show based on Twilight, but The Hollywood Reporter reported that not much about the show has been revealed yet. Will it be a carbon copy of the films, or will it go in a totally different direction?
The director of the first film, Catherine Hardwicke, recently appeared on Josh Horowitz’s YouTube show to rewatch Twilight and spill some nuggets about the upcoming remake. Her comments are kind of unhinged, so stick with me.
Everything Catherine Hardwicke said about the Twilight remake.
When the host asked Catherine how she’d change Twilight if she was making it today, she had some ~unusual~ thoughts.
“Of course they’re doing a TV series, [but] I haven’t actually found out [what] they [are] trying to do… Maybe they don’t even know [yet] because we had the writer’s strike, so you couldn’t work on it,” she said. “How close do you stick to the original and how much do you change it?”
The original Twilight Saga was set in Forks, a remote town in Washington State. But if Catherine was in charge of the remake, she’d pop our family of vampires, werewolves and Bella in… outer space.
“For me, it would be fun to do Twilight in outer space… I’d be ecstatic to do that, something totally different,” she explained. So… Star Wars meets Twilight? It’s bizarre, but then again, so are sparkly vampires. And you know, maybe a cute Ewok would make Bella less moody.
The director is also convinced that Jacob Elordi would make the perfect Edward Cullen, after seeing his turn in Saltburn. She’s also a big fan of Wednesday’s Jenna Ortega, and thinks she’d be an “amazing” Bella Swan.
Fans react to Jacob Elordi and Jenna Ortega playing Edward and Bella.
There’s a real mixed bag of opinions on X (formerly Twitter), with some embracing Jacob and Jenna as the new Edward and Bella of 2023. See for yourself:
I can totally get behind this casting

They can never be another (Bella and Edward) but if Jacob and Jenna are replacing them, it’ll be the baddest combo

Others pointed out the fact that Jenna is a petite 5’1’’, while Jacob is 6’5’’. Unless they pull a Tom Cruise and pop Jenna on an apple box for their scenes together, it may look slightly comedic.
their height difference would look ridiculous i fear

A bunch of people were outraged by the thought of anyone taking Kristen and Rob’s place, and others validated my exact feelings: can we just LEAVE Twilight alone and chill out with the remakes?
I’ll leave you with this tweet which sums up everything in one tidy snap:
please just STOP with the remakes. we can only take so much. pic.twitter.com/6aMPeV2eUi
