Let’s Breakdown The Controversy Around Vanessa From ‘Love Island’ Complaining About Her Quarantine Hair

In a matter of hours, Vanessa Sierra has gone from influencer to household name. Whether you recognise her from reality tv or from the news last night, here’s a rundown of who Vanessa Sierra is and why she’s in the news right now.

Who is Vanessa Sierra?

You’re probably wondering where you recognise Vanessa Sierra from. Well, let me break it down for you because she’s popped up into the zeitgeist quite a bit.

Most notably, Vanessa Sierra was one of the contestants on Love Island: Australia Season 2, back in 2019. Here, she was quite a polarising figure. During the show, she was matched with Matthew Zukowski (who now dates Keira Maguire). But, before this, she dated Dan Webb (who you remember from Married At First Sight), after he broke up with Jess Power.  Check her out in action here:

After her controversial stint on reality tv, Vanessa Sierra comfortably transitioned into becoming an influencer. At the end of last year, Vanessa Sierra had around a million followers on her main account before it was taken down by Instagram. The reason for this is presumably because she was posting content that was too risque that it broke Instagram’s ‘Community Guidelines’. Now, she uses her backup account which has just over 100k followers.

At the moment, she’s dating tennis player Bernard Tomic. These two are currently quarantining together as we near the start of the Australian Open. They’ve been dating for a few months now and he’s already appeared on her OnlyFans account. Oh, and if we’ve forgotten to mention, she has one of the biggest Aussie OnlyFans accounts. You know, if that’s up your alley!

From Quarantine To Media Coverage

On Monday, Vanessa Sierra uploaded a vlog to her YouTube channel titled ‘Life in the Australian Open player bubble.’ Here, she spends most of the 8 minutes talking about her experience with Bernard Tomic as they navigate boredom and order Uber Eats. In the clip, she mentions how she hasn’t washed her hair in lockdown because she usually goes to the salon for that.

“This is the worst part of quarantine: I don’t wash my own hair. I’ve never washed my own hair. It’s just not something that I do. I normally have hairdressers that do it twice a week for me, so this is the situation that we’re dealing with,” Sierra said in the video.

This specific statement has been taken by various media outlets which has resulted in  Vanessa Sierra copping a bunch of backlash including a shout out from Aussie tennis player Nick Kyrgios.

Vanessa Sierra’s Response

Since the backlash, Vanessa Sierra has taken to her Instagram (both via story and post) to talk about the situation. On her Instagram stories, Vanessa Sierra spoke about how she’s begun to receive death threats and subsequently urged haters to “have a cry.”

“It’s easy to take something out of context when you take 2 sentences out of a 10-minute vlog, and throw it in a negative news story on mainstream media amidst tennis player complaints about their mandatory quarantine.” Vanessa further explained in a post on Instagram on Tuesday.

Vanessa Sierra continued. “My vlog is irrelevant to the above complaints. Social media is my fulltime work and daily vlogs on YouTube are a part of this, I’m real, honest, and raw and show things as they are. Watching the snippets, as an outsider on Channel 7’s twisted story with no idea of who I am, what I do, or having watched any of my previous vlogs, of course, it’s going to look bad. How could it not? You can shape anything to look bad with a bit of cutting and merging into a negative news story.”

“Had these same people watched my vlog without 7’s influence, I’m sure they would’ve seen my video as tongue in cheek and light-hearted, and found it somewhat interesting to have this preview of our lives… People who know me know I’m not one to complain. And yes. I will make jokes to brighten a mentally challenging situation.”

There you have it! Until next time, Vanessa Sierra.
