While she’s been portrayed on this series of The Bachelor as very much the villain, Keira Maguire showed a much softer side in an interview with Carrie Bickmore, aired last night on The Project.

In an tearful exchange, Maguire addressed her upbringing in a polygamist cult, founded in the 1970s and dubbed ‘The Seaside Sect’, which was recently splashed across the news in a Woman’s Day feature.

Her father Alistah Laishkochav, had nine wives, 63 children and was later convicted of child sex offences and died in jail.

One of Laishkochav’s wives was Maguire’s mother Michelle, she removed her children from the sect when Keira was five years old. She told Bickmore, how it felt growing up.

“I kind of knew that I was different. I didn’t want to tell people because I didn’t want to be judged,” she said. “I just, even in relationships with guys, … I never opened up about it because I didn’t want them to judge me, because I’m not normal.”
