The American TV adaptation of Melbourne based film ‘Animal Kingdom‘ will hit US airwaves in 2016 and today TNT have given us the first peek. The story based in 1980’s Melbourne will shift to the sunny beachside community of Oceanside in California.

While much of the new script is still unknown, it looks to mimic elements of the original true story inspired by the Pettingill family but will drill deeper in to the characters.

At a press event, the show’s producer John Wells told media that that:

“There are any number of fantastic films which became very good television series because the initial material was rich”

On a first glimpse, the series looks dramatic but fails to feel nearly as raw and confronting as the film that saw Jackie Weaver nominated for an Oscar. It’ll be interesting to see how the Yanks tackle the intense story and span it out across multiple series.

Another member of the crew Jonathon Lisco shed some light at the press event, stating:

“We’re going to make it a more nuanced portrayal of a mother who both loves her sons, but also vandalises them and has emotionally warped them while at the same time coddled them.”

The trailer comes as part of a 2016 feature reel for TNT which you can watch below. Skip through to the 3:00 minute mark to see Animal Kingdom’s slot.
