WATCH: Waleed Aly Interviews Australia’s First Openly Gay Muslim Imam On The Project
Nur Warsame is a prominent figure within the Australian Islamic community, while he was once married and has a young daughter, Nur would become Australia’s first openly gay Imam- coming out publicly this year.
Nur sat down with The Project’s Waleed Aly, to talk about his struggles growing up, with his religion at odds with his sexuality, his reaction to the Orlando massacre and shone a light on the gay Muslim population in Australia. Nur told Waleed:
“The problems we’re addressing now in the Muslim community, other religions have gone through it in Australia but I believe we have a great opportunity to address it on a religious level, a cultural level and a social level,” he said.
“The fact is we are murdering our youth our sons and daughters for some fanatical idealism and, you know, we are suffering and they are suffering.”
